Salvation Army thankful for community's support

I am writing to thank the Carson City community for their support of The Salvation Army as we strive to serve the needy during the holidays this year.

Because of the faithful support of Mike's Pharmacy and KOH-AM 780, we received 1,099 turkeys from the community and shared them with other family service agencies in Carson City, Tahoe, Douglas County, China Spring and Washoe. Along with those turkeys, The Salvation Army gave out the fixings for a warm Thanksgiving meal for close to 300 families.

For Christmas, we gave out gifts to 1,000-plus children and 300-plus elderly here in the community and a complete Christmas meal with either a ham or a turkey to more than 300 families. Each child received at least two gifts and several stocking stuffers. This was all made possible by the support of the community placing food in our food barrels, donating toys, sending in checks, or putting a little extra change into one of our red kettles.

I want the community to know that we appreciate all that you have done to make this holiday season a success. The Salvation Army is here in Carson City on a mission to serve the community's needs in the name of Jesus, and call for your continued support to do so.

TRIAD dinner honors graduates, seniors

Douglas County Nevada TRIAD held its annual senior educational seminar and Christmas dinner for graduates of the Sheriff's Senior Law Enforcement Academy and patrons from the Douglas County Senior Center at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville on Dec. 13.

The venue, table decorations, presentations, menu and door prizes were all excellent. There were approximately 120 attendees at this event.

Sheriff Ron Pierini and TRIAD President Travis Lee were the masters of ceremonies. Sheriff's Capt. Dan Britton made a very interesting presentation on "Active Shooters and the IHOP Incident." He also included information on how to avoid and be protected from these horrific incidents.

The Sheriff's Explorer Post 2105 presented the flag of our country and helped TRIAD set the tables, serve the dinner and clean up following the meal. The dinner, which was delicious, was prepared by Erik Buehrle and his crew from the Douglas County Jail kitchen. This dinner was a good holiday season event.

Mentors, youth celebrate holidays thanks to support

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada Mentor Center wishes to thank some very special people.

For 11 years, the staff of Wells Fargo Bank has invited youth and mentors to a party. More than 80 people filled Wells Fargo East Carson Branch to celebrate the holidays with food, crafts and a visit from Santa Claus.

Huge thanks to Michaela Marazzo, service manager, Laura Wulff, store manager, and Lisa Sturgiss, vice president, Capitol District, for organizing the party and helping Santa shop for presents. John Hurzel of A Catered Affaire generously provided a delicious dinner buffet. Kathy Loomis and Starbucks on Highway 50 provided hot chocolate and coffee.

Because Father Chuck Durante and Sister Marie McGloin of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community share the message of good will, an anonymous family made a difference in the lives of nine children and their single moms this Christmas. The ripple effect will last generations as they all pledge to pay it forward.

The stylists at Bella Salon, owned by Janette Bonaldi, chose to celebrate their holidays by providing beautifully wrapped and specially chosen gifts for two of our youth being raised by their grandmother and their infant cousin. Grandma received gifts as well!

None of these youth and their families asked for anything, and yet lives were touched by the generosity of others. The citizens of Carson City should be proud that we have such giving and caring people in our community and in our places of business and faith.

Thanks to mall for donation to Food For Thought

Food For Thought wishes to extend a very big thank you to Kevin Ray and the Carson Mall.

They donated space and food for our Ladies Night Out event on Dec. 6. They allowed us to make enough money to feed hungry kids in our community for three weeks.

Carson Valley Art Association wants to thank its donors for contributions of prizes for its raffle benefiting our scholarship fund. These donations provide prizes for the raffle at the end of our scholarship benefit show. And CVAA thanks its patrons, who attended our show, for buying the raffle tickets along with the entry fees from the artists, entering our show, and the sales from the flea market of art supplies, CVAA is able to fund the scholarships awarded to Douglas High School graduates continuing in their art education.
