130 YEARS AGO

Fire Bell: A fire broke out in a dwelling house on the corner of Spear and Curry streets, occupied by F. Johnson. The Curry Company attached their hose to the hydrant in front of Kitzmeyer's furniture store and it was frozen. The Warren hose cart passed on and the hydrant at the Stone Market was frozen too. Warm water was procured and poured into it and once the hydrant was repaired water could be put through the hose. The Swift steamer worked the cistern on Telegraph and Curry street as it was feared the fire was spreading.

120 YEARS AGO

Blind children: Edison is at work on a phonograph for the use of blind children that will do away with the raised letter books now used for their instruction.

70 YEARS AGO

The Appeal has informed the public that a census of all horses and mules "of military age" (between three and 10 years) in this part of the United States has been ordered. Registration blanks are being forwarded to all Ormsby county stock owners.

50 YEARS AGO

A spearhead found in Washoe Valley by a Reno fireman and his wife indicate man lived and hunted there about two thousand years earlier than previously supposed. Dr. Richard Shutler, curator of anthropology for the Nevada State Museum, said the discovery shows that the man lived in the valley from 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. He said the "clovis point" spearhead is similar to those found in Arizona and New Mexico.

State officials have denied a request by Carson City to lease a portion of the old Stewart Indian school for potential relocation sites of the Carson City fairgrounds.
