AUBURN, Calif. - Carson High's wrestling team placed fifth at the Placer duals on Saturday afternoon at Placer High School.
Carson compiled a 4-1 record, the only blemish being a 41-34 loss to Paradise. Carson opened the tournament by beating Capital Christian 72-12 and Bear River 62-14 before suffering its only setback of the meet. Carson came back with a 49-22 win over Archbishop Mitty and a 54-20 over Oroville.
"We had a real good day," said Carson coach Tim McCarthy. "Against Paradise we had a couple of matches that could have gone either way, but didn't go our way."
Six Carson wrestlers - Sam Mercado (113), Cole McCarthy (126), Autin Brown (138), Nico Garcia (182), Patrick Cooke (220) and Brayan Burgos (heavyweight) - all went undefeated with 5-0 records.
Garcia pinned all five of his opponents, while Brown and McCarthy recorded four pins apiece. Mercado, Cooke and Burgos had three pins each.
The performances of Mercado and Burgos were pleasant surprises.
"Burgos is starting to get (more) aggressive streak in him," McCarthy said. "He's starting to like it. Sammy said he was tired of losing. I don't know if he'd ever gone 5-0 at a JV tournament. they both had big days."
McCarthy said Cooke was contemplating dropping down to 195, but opted to stop once he hit 202. The football star is starting to put some more weight back on and will stay at 220.
"Patrick had a good day," said McCarthy. "He won a couple of clkose matches and had three pins."
Kyle Sharp (106) and Adan Ortega (120) both went 4-1, while Brady Rivera (170), Nicholas Lani (132) and Jordan Luhrs (152) were all 3-2.
Carson returns to action Wednesday at 6 against Douglas in its final dual match of the year.
JV WRESTLING
Five wrestlers place
RENO - Five Carson High wrestlers placed in the JV zone tournament at McQueen on Saturday.
Heavyweight Jordan Woodward was Carson's only first-place finisher. Anthony Estrada (126) and Kaleb Wold (106) placed second, while John Artz (106) took third. Alex Cunningham was fourth at 138.
JV BASKETBALL
Senators roll on
Carson, led by Gina Peacock's 17 points, knocked off Douglas 47-21 on Friday to improve to 18-3.
Kayla Aikins added eight and Skye Simpson six for the Senators.
JUNIOR COLLEGE
WNC gets a sweep
LAS VEGAS - Western Nevada bounced back from a tough loss in its season debut on Friday to sweep South Mountain College, 1-0 and 2-1, at Sierra Vista High School on Saturday.
The teams conclude the four game series with a single game at 11 a.m.
Tyler Spencer picked up the win in th opening game, throwing four innings and striking out five while walking two and allowing one hit. Austin Richmond followed and pitched into the seventh before being relieved by Brandon Show, who stranded the tying and winning runs at first and second, respectively.
"Obviously Tyler pitched a whale of a game," said D.J. Whittemore.
Western scored the game's only run in the fourth when Derrick Pitts walked and scored on a triple to right by Rayne Raven.
In the second game, Brandon Jackson pitched the first four innings to get the win. Evan Parker pitched 1/3 of an inning and allowed South Mountain's only run. Raven finished up the final 2 2/3 innings to get the save.
WNC took a 2-0 lead in the fourth when Taylor Smart walked and scored on a triple by Mike Umschied. Pitts followed with a sacrifice fly.
