'Soul Music' art exhibit at galleries

Sharon Tetly finds her soul through her art. This summer, the Western Nevada College Art professor shares a part of her self in a creative and vibrant exhibit at the Carson City campus.

"Soul Music" is a series of large, abstract print assemblages that are several feet tall and hang as if suspended in the air along the walls of the College Gallery and Atrium Gallery. The leafy, angular shapes change with every angle of view, and seem as if they are interlocking parts of a puzzle, or perhaps dancers in the sky.

Tetly said the exhibit is part of an ongoing body of work she has been involved with for a number of years.

"I find it hard to explain," she said, "except to say that I have to do it and it reflects feelings for which I have no words, and questions for which I have no answers and perhaps never will, and that it is endlessly intriguing to create."

Tetly said the catalyst for the exhibit was two-fold: summer workshops at the Canadian School for Non-toxic Printmaking in Grande Prairie, Alberta; and the unexpected death of a dear friend.

"With every dancing and silently singing form that emerges," she said, "I have the sense that I have made visible something important to life and living."

The exhibit is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open weekdays, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
