Ex-WNC pitcher drafted by Mets

Tim Peterson, Western Nevada College's co-pitcher of the year in 2011, was selected by the New York Mets in the 20th round of the amateur draft on Wednesday.

Peterson won 12 games in a Wildcats' uniform while playing for coach D.J. Whittemore from 2010-11.

This past season, he pitched for the University of Kentucky Wildcats, posting a 3-0 record with a 2.42 ERA in 26 innings of relief.

In 2011 for WNC, Peterson was 8-1 with a 3.45 ERA, and 63 strikeouts in 60 innings. Peterson was a first-team choice for Region 18 and shared Western Nevada's Pitcher of theYear honors with Anthony Consiglio.

In his first season at WNC, Peterson won four of six decisions while recording a 2.51 ERA and striking out 39 batters in 43 innings.

On Tuesday, Wildcats pitcher Dylan Baker became the highest draft pick ever out of Western Nevada when the Cleveland Indians took the 6-foot-3 right-hander in the fifth round.

• WNC softball star Taleas Marble is continuing her career at the four-year level after signing a letter-of-intent with the University of Texas-Permian Basin.

As a Wildcat, Marble crushed the softball on a weekly basis this spring, setting records in eight offensive categories while being named to the NJCAA All-Region 18 second team. Batting third in the Wildcats' order, Marble decimated Scenic West Athletic Conference pitching, hitting .391 with 16 homers. Both of those totals were school records, along with her three triples, 29 walks, 52 RBI, 133 total bases, .764 slugging average and .467 on-base average.

"It's wonderful," said WNC assistant coach Rosie Contri."She reeked of confidence. She would get in the batter's box and would have a definite determination on her face. No matter what they threw her, she was going to hit."

Marble played her freshman year at Snow College before transferring to WNC.

"It was definitely a blessing, and we were very, very grateful to have her as part of the squad," Contri said. "The attitude she brought to the team was phenomenal."

Marble's ability to routinely deliver big hits quickly endeared her to head coach Leah Wentworth.

"We can always count on her to come through with a hit when we need her to," said Wentworth after Marble homered in a win against North Idaho early in the conference season.
