Carson 9-10s get no-hit by Charles

If the Carson City Little League 9-10 All-Stars are going to win the District 1 tournament, they are going to have to come through the loser's bracket to do it.

Rylan Charles tossed a no-hitter to lead Sparks Centennial to an easy 11-0 win over Carson Saturday afternoon at Governors Field.

The loss drops Carson into the loser's bracket. It will play tonight at 7:30.

Charles. who struck out six batters, needed just 53 pitches in his four-inning gem. He allowed just one baserunner, Diego Lopez, who rached on an error to start the first.

"He's a really good pitcher," Carson coach Bob Sevens said of the 10-year-old Charles. "They are a well-disciplined team. We faced a real good team.

"We didn't come out with any intensity whatsoever. That may have been because of the two wins. We just had no fire."

And the defense was a bit off. Carson was charged with four errors, and there were a couple of other balls that probbly should have been handled. Sparks Centennial made Carson pay for every free base, which is what a good team should do.

Sparks took a quick 2-0 lead when Christian Carlson singled and moved to second when Charles was plunked by Carson starter Vernon Painter. After J.T. Skiver struck out, Alex Padilla's infield single loaded the bases. Jacob Williamson followed with a two-run single up the middle.

Painter struck out the side in the second, but ran into trouble in the third when Sparks struck for five runs to take a 7-0 lead.

Dylan Husted reached on an error and went to third when Charles' sacrifice bunt was thrown away at first. Skiver followed with a two-run double to right, moved to third on Padilla's single and scored on Williamson's infield out. A wild pitch, which saw two runs score, completed the barrage.

That was more than enough cushion for Charles.

10-11s lose to North Tahoe

Carson City's title hopes were dashed after it dropped a 6-3 decision to North Tahoe in a loser's bracket game at the District 1 tourney.

Carson falls to 1-2 in tournament play and will get to play at least one more game.

Carson led 3-2 after four innings, but North Tahoe struck for four runs and five hits to grab a 6-3 lead after five innings.

Derek Laferrier singled and was forced at second by winnng pitcher Graham Payne. Jonny Redfern singled off the first baseman's glove and Payne came around to core, tying the game at 3. Isaac Mozen singled to right, and when the ball got past the fielder, Redfern was able to score to give North tahoe a 4-3 lead. Scott Murphy followed with a run-scoring single, and after Dalton Fry struck out, Eli Snyder delivered hi second run-scoring hit of the game to score Murphy and make it 6-3.

Payne, who needed just 80 pitches, easily retired Carson in the top of the sixth to finish the game.

Carson got off to a fast start, scoring two unearned runs in the first thanks to a double by Blake Menzel., a two-out error by the NT shortstop and a single by the red-hit Teigen Key.

North Taho got one back in the fourth when Wes Steinkopff was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Laferriere. Payne also singled, bu Mozen grounded out to end the inning.

Carson took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth when Ben Nelson hit a one-out ingle, moved to third on a single by Garrett Clampitt and scored on an infield out by Garritt Benavidez.

North Tahoe made it 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth on doubles by Fry and Snyder.

Menzel led the Carson offense with two hits.
