Susan Martinovich, head of the Nevada Department of Transportation, told her staff this week she will retire later this year.

Martinovich said she will probably leave in August or early September before the start of the 2013 Legislature.

Martinovich has been with NDOT nearly 28 years. She was hired after graduating from college with a degree in engineering.

Martinovich was appointed the department's first female director in January 2007 by the Nevada State Board of Transportation, which is chaired by the governor. The board also includes the lieutenant governor, attorney general and controller as well as voting civilian appointees.
