PREPS: Carson softball wins pool play

ELK GROVE, Calif. - Carson High's softball team knocked off Oak Ridge, 3-1, and Will C. Wood, 8-0, to win its pool at the Preseason Victory TOC Friday night.

The two wins give Carson a 3-0 record heading into today's action. Carson plays its first game at 12:30 against Pleasant Grove and its second game at either 5 or 6:45 p.m., depending on the outcome of the first game.

"I can't remember us being seeded No. 1 going into Saturday," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "The girls are playing well together."

The Senators got strong efforts in the circle from both Lou Ashbaugh and Christa McGahuey.

McGahuey scattered five hits against Oak Ridge in going the distance.

"Christa threw well and kept us in the game," Vickrey said.

After one out, Emily Collins tripled and scored on Jennifer Purcell's infield out. Oak Ridge came back to tie the game with a run in the fifth.

Carson came back with two in the sixth when Elisse McGowan singled and moved to second when Morgan Kleine reached on an error. Collins was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After McGowan was picked off third, Purcell grounded out, advancing the runners to second and third. McGahuey followed with a two-run single to snap the tie and give Carson the win.

The Wood-Carson game was scoreless after three, but the Senators scored five in the fourth and three in the fifth to win the game on a mercy rule.

Collins singled to lead off the inning and Purcell followed with a homer. McGahuey doubled and scored on an error to make it 3-0. Ashbaugh doubled and came around to score on a single by McGowan. An error scored the final run of the inning.

In the fifth, Purcell singled and scored on McGahuey's triple. Dee Morrow followed with a sacrifuce fly to make it 7-0. Ashbaugh singled and eventually scored on a double by McGowan to make it 8-0.

Ashbaugh threw all five innings and struck out two batters.

Dayton wins twice

YERINGTON - The Dayton Dust Devils opened with two wins at the Yerington Tournament on Friday.

Dayton blanked Truckee 4-0 and 10-runned Incline 18-8 in its second game.

The Dust Devils play Battle Mountain today at 8:30 a.m. and then face Fernley at 1:45 p.m.

Makayla Shadle threw all six innings against Truckee, fanning 12 and allowing six hits.

Kelly Combs provided all the offense Dayton needed with a three-run homer in the second, scoring Kalee Alexander and Gemma Ramirez, both of whom singled. Combs went 3-for-3 as did Shadle. Alexander finished with two hits.

The Incline game was stopped after five innings on the 10-run rule. Shadle relieved Combs in the third inning.

Andrea Ramirez went 4-for-4 with a double, while Combs and Alexander added two hits apiece.

VARSITY BASEBALL

Carson earns split

SPARKS - Carson High split its first two games at the Mike Bearman Tournament on Friday.

The Senators knocked off Spanish Springs 6-3 and then dropped a 5-4 decision to Reed to fall to 2-1 on the year.

Jace Zampirro worked the first four innings against Spanish Springs, allowing two runs and five hits. Tyler Valley and Cole Dufresne finished up for Carson.

Carson trailed 3-1 after five but exploded for five runs in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. Nick Domitrovich walked and moved to econd on a single by Chase Blueberg. Casey Wolfe walked to load the bases. Drew Moreland and Brock Pradere delivered run-scoring hits and Gehrig Tucker followed with a two-run double.

In the Reed game, the Raiders took a 1-0 lead and then Carson scored three in the third when Rory Petersen doubled in two runs and Banfield had a run-scoring double. Banfield was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

After Reed cut the lead to 3-2, Carson tacked on a run in the fourth to go ahead 4-2 when Copoulos laid down a push bunt to score Wolfe, who had doubled. Reed scored one in the fourth to tie and two in the seventh to win it.

Pradere had five hits in the doubleheader and Tucker finished with three.

Dust Devils get split

YERINGTON - Dayton opened its season with a split at the Yerington Tournament, losing, 6-2, to Battle Mountain and knocking off Yerington, 4-1.

"I was happy with the second game," Dayton coach Jay Merrell said. "The first game we were tentative. We have a lot of young kids and it's the first time we've seen somebody wearing a different color."

Elliott King and Taryn Aguilera each singled in runs for Dayton in the opener. Sam Hadley had the other hit for Dayton, which managed just three hits.

Michael Dieneman went the full six innings in the second game, allowing one hit and striking out four. He also contributed a run-scoring single in the second as did Skyler Preston. Payton Morena had a run-scoring double in the fourth. Hadley went 2-for-3 for Dayton.

Dayton plays South Tahoe at 9:45 a.m. today and Fernley at 4:45 p.m.

JC SOFTBALL

WNC gets split

LAS VEGAS - Western Nevada topped College of Southern Nevada, 7-5, to earn a split in its Scenic West doubleheader on Friday.

CSN won the opener, 7-6, pushing across a run in th bottom of the seventh, snapping a 6-all tie.

WNC is now 8-9 in league and 13-18 overall. The teams play a doubleheader today starting at 11 a.m.

WNC cruised to a 7-1 lead in the second game, only to see CSN score four in the seventh before being retired.

Lexi Alley went 6.1 innings to pick up the win. Jennifer Quam went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, Trinity Thom went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Katirina Rand hit three doubles. Alia Cox chipped in two hits in the win.

In the opener, Melanie Pfeiffer went 3-for-3, while Taleas Marble went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Niki DiSera went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Quam also contributed two hits. Thom had a hit and RBI.

JV SOFTBALL

Carson wins twice

SPARKS - Carson's JV team beat Reed, 4-0, and Damonte Ranch, 13-2, at Shadow Mountain on Friday afternoon.

Because of technical difficulties, no other information was available.

SWIMMING

Carson splits with Galena

Carson split its season-opening meet against Galena on Friday. The Carson boys beat Galena, 141-124, and the Galena girls topped Carson, 176-103, at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Tim Grunert and Eli Everest won two events apiece. Grunert won the 200 free in 2:01.89 and the 100 breast in 1:06.03. Everest won the 500 free in 5:33.15 and the 100 back in 1:09.41. Cory Gentner won the 50 free in 28.30 and Zach White won the 100 free in 55.30.

Sophie Holmes placed second in the 50 free (27.67) and the 200 IM (2:33.94). Abi Pittman was second in the 100 fly (1:11.92) and second in the 200 free (2:13.05).
