SkillsUSA recently held regional contests for automotive, culinary and photography.

Two Carson High School students competed in the automotive contest, and Levi Carter placed high enough to advance to the SkillsUSA State Competition.

The culinary classes brought four students, and all four students won their contest in regionals and will now advance to the state competition. The four culinary students are Michael Bunce, Genoa Donaldson, Andrea Davis and Kayse Childers.

The photography classes were allowed to bring only five students to compete. Of that, four of them placed high enough to advance to state competition: Cristol Greer, McKennah Tackett, Haley Hannah and Talon Grayshield. SkillsUSA State Competition will be in Reno this year at the end of April. The students have a lot of work ahead of them in preparation for the next step.

Other students competing at state that did not have regional events will be competing in Web Design, 3D Animation Design, Auto Body Repair, AutoCAD and Networking. In addition, all students also compete in leadership contests that allow them to show their workplace readiness skills.

In all, there should be about 40 students representing Carson High School at the SkillsUSA State Competition.

SUMMER OF DISCOVERY CAMP AT UNR

Summer of Discover Camp at UNR, Aug. 12-17, is a great opportunity for students interested in science or a career in the medical field.

All students who have at least a 2.5 grade-point average and will be a freshman through junior during the 2012-2013 school year are encouraged to apply.

VOLLEYBALL OPEN GYM

Volleyball Open Gym will be 6-8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays in the small gym and after school Tuesdays and Thursdays in the big gym. Contact coach Been in room 260 for more information.

STUDENT THANKSCHS FOR JOB

Miguel Lopez, a senior at CHS, is in his third year of culinary arts, taught by Penny Reynolds.

Miguel was recently hired at Adele's as the assistant baker. Miguel is pleased with the education he has received at CHS, and excited to begin his career. We congratulate Miguel on this awesome opportunity!

SPEECH & DEBATE RESULTS

The Carson High School Debate program hosted a successful tournament March 2 and 3. A special thanks to all in the community who volunteered time to judge and help the tournament be a success. Carson High would also like to thank Del Taco and Grandma Hattie's for catering the tournament.

This also was the most successful tournament so far this year for Carson High competitors. Team captain Julianna Powell took first place in senior dramatic interpretation with her piece on "Flowers for Algernon" looking at the possibilities and dangers of advanced and experimental medicine.

Julianna organized and ran the tournament as part of her senior project in addition to competing.

Rebecca Matley had a successful tournament, placing first in novice storytelling, third in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, and placing second overall in speaking points in Lincoln-Douglas. Rebecca has now advanced to senior level competition for interpretation categories.

Katie Garza and Katharyn Woods placed third in novice duo for their interpretation of "Mean Girls." Katharyn has now placed twice in interpretation pieces and has also advanced to the senior division.

Finally, Sergio Ramirez placed fourth in novice expository speaking for his presentation on what makes a good children's storybook. The team will compete in the state competition March 23 and 24 at Douglas High School.

SAFE GRAD FUNDRAISERS

Capital Ford is returning to CHS on March 31 for the "Drive One 4 UR School." Each person who takes a 10-minute test drive will earn the SafeGrad committee $20.

Please stop by the CHS north parking lot to take a test drive.

Reno Bighorn Basketball is helping the SafeGrad committee by offering up its $8 and $12 tickets to CHS by giving back half of every ticket sold by a CHS senior or SafeGrad committee member. Game time is 3 p.m. April 1. To purchase tickets, email melissa.weddell@gmail.com or call 790-9637.

STAFF FACT

Answer to last week's fact is Sarah Lobsinger. Sarah graduated from Oklahoma State University and is proud to say she taught the lead singer of the All-American Rejects, Tyson Ritter, when she taught in Stillwater, Okla.

New Fact: This teacher crossed the Arctic Circle while serving in the U.S. Navy and is currently a member of the Navy Reserves.
