Alice Marie Dofflemyre was surrounded by her beloved family when she departed this life on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at her Carson City home. She was 99.
Alice was born March 9, 1913, in Santa Cruz, Calif., to Aurelia (Barbieri) and Peter Antonetti. She was the youngest of three and a first-generation American.
On Sept. 17, 1932, she and Ralph V. Dofflemyre, her high-school sweetheart, eloped to Carson City and were married at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. They returned to Santa Cruz to begin their married years. Alice gave birth to their daughter, Barbara Jean Dofflemyre, on Nov. 28, 1936.
Alice and Ralph later moved to Castroville, Monterey and Watsonville, Calif., before moving to Reno in 1945, when Ralph worked for Union Ice. In 1948, the couple moved to Carson City and bought two grocery stores, Eagle Market and Stone Market. In 1955, Ralph bought Matthews Furniture and changed the name to Carson Furniture, which he owned from 1955-61. In the meantime, Alice worked for the state of Nevada from 1955-59 and then bought Lariat Dress Shop, which she ran from 1959-64. The couple moved to Washoe Valley in 1962. Ralph died in July 1984, and Alice returned to Carson City where she remained, buying a home next door to her daughter.
Alice volunteered working with senior citizens, was a member of the Sagebrush garden club, a riding club, hospital auxiliary and was a gift shop volunteer at Carson Tahoe Hospital. She loved gardening and tended to her vegetables, flowers and trees, turning her produce into preserves by making jams and jellies. She loved to cook, and her meat ravioli recipe is treasured by her family.
Alice was a wonderful, gracious lady who was quick to smile and to laugh. She brought joy to those around her, and her vivacious spirit continued to shine through her final days. She was the matriarch of the family, and her memory will be cherished by all who loved her.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Longero; grandson Ron Longero and wife, Mimi; grandson Mike Longero and wife, Jorja; great-granddaughter Laura (Longero) Holman and husband, David Holman; great-grandson Cody Longero; great-granddaughter Abbie Longero; great-granddaughter Sarah Longero and fiance, T.J. Durham; and great-granddaughter Mary Longero.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ralph Dofflemyre; parents, Peter and Aurelia; sister, Inez Duckworth; brother, Andrew Antonetti; and son-in-law, Delbert Longero.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at Walton's Funeral Home, 1281 N. Roop St., Carson City. The Rev. Ronald Longero will be officiating.
