Learn to select seeds

If it seems like there are too many choices when selecting what seeds to plant in the vegetable garden, Julie Ruf of Greenhouse Garden Center will give a free seminar on "Selecting the Right Seeds for Great Seasonal Vegetables," from 1-2 p.m. today.

Julie was a seed representative for Botanical Interests seeds for several years, and her years of experience and knowledge will help class participants select from Botanical Interest Seeds, Ferry Morse Seeds, and Burpee Seeds.

Community policing program canceled

Sheriff Ken Furlong is sorry to announce that the Sheriff's Office is canceling the Business Academy dur to unforeseen circumstances.

The Citizen's Academy will still be held this year.

Dinner speaker to be Justice Michael Cherry

The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States announces that Michael A. Cherry, associate chief justice of the Nevada State Supreme Court, will be the speaker at Wednesday's dinner meeting. Cherry will talk about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and related legal issues facing military members when they return home.

Workshop on park's management plan

The Nevada Division of State Parks is starting the planning process for updating the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park's general management plan, and is seeking public input on planning issues, user needs and potential park management or development opportunities.

The first public workshop is an opportunity for the public to help shape the park's plan early in the process.

The workshop is from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the multi-purpose room in the Richard H. Bryan Building at 901 South Stewart St. It will begin with a presentation on the planning approach, followed by an opportunity to discuss issues and comments with state park staff.

Club offers Genghis Kahn program

The Leisure Hour Club of Carson City will host former state archivist Guy Rocha as their guest speaker in March.

Rocha recently traveled Mongolia with an experienced small group dedicated to tracing the life journey of Genghis Kahn through the Steppe country of western Mongolia back to Kahn's birthplace.

The dinner meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Carson Nugget upstairs reception room.

Home repair funds now available

Home repair loan and grant funds are now available for low-income and senior homeowners in rural Nevada who need some help to complete home repairs and make their homes safe, accessible and energy-efficient. The purpose of the program is to assist homeowners who have limited financial resources to maintain their homes and remain in their rural communities. Certain eligibility requirements apply.

Common improvements include replacement of water heaters, enhanced accessibility for disabled people and enhanced energy efficiency.

'Spring Colors' art show features reception

The Nevada Artists Association opens it new "Spring Colors" art show at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery in Carson City. The exhibit opens Monday and will run through April 27.

The NAA's featured artist for this show is Carson City's Mary Panzer. She will exhibit her works in oil and water media on the Gallery's coveted back wall. Panzer's work will be on display through April 6.

A reception will be held at the gallery for Panzer from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited to this catered event for some food, libations, elbow rubbing with the artist, and to enjoy the Gallery's art.

Artist offers three-day workshop on ranch

Gardnerville artist Teri Sweeney will hold a three-day painting workshop at the Hunewill Ranch in Bridgeport, Calif., June 13-16.

This workshop will focus on painting the life of a ranch, including the cows, horses and, of course, the cowboys and cowgirls that keep the ranch operating smoothly.

In addition to the three days of painting instruction, participants will stay in the rooms at the ranch which also will be providing all meals and entertainment every evening. There is also an optional trail ride offered for this group.

This workshop is open to all mediums, but demonstrations will be done in watercolor.

Sweeney is a nationally recognized artist whose work has recently won acceptance into western art circles. Achievements include participation in the CM Russell Auction and the Western Masters Art Show in Great Falls, Mont., Cowgirl Up! in Wickenburg, Ariz., and the San Dimas Invitational Art Show in San Dimas, Calif. She also teaches weekly classes at her studio in Gardnerville and for the Tahoe Art League in South Lake Tahoe.

Jon Sanchez to speak at GOP women's meeting

Carson City Republican Women hold their monthly meeting Tuesday, and invite the public to hear guest speaker Jon Sanchez, chief executive officer of Sanchez Wealth Management.

Sanchez is a noted local radio talk show host, author and motivational speaker. Tuesday's meeting will focus on getting ready for tax day and the Republican presidential candidates' plans for tax reform.

Art Benefit for the family of Reiko Hervin

An art benefit will be from 4-7 p.m. April 6 at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda Ave. in Minden.

Well-known Nevada artist and teacher, Reiko Hervin, died Nov. 26 from injuries received in a head-on collision Nov. 6.

Donated artwork from fellow artists will be offered in a silent auction during the benefit. Hervin's giclees and a limited edition of her last work will be available for purchase.

The public is welcome to this free event. Light refreshments will be available.

Democrats to see Obama documentary at annual dinner

The recently released documentary, "The Road We've Traveled," by Academy-award-winning director Davis Guggenheim will be shown at the Douglas Democrats' Keep Nevada Blue Dinner at the Carson Valley Inn March 24.

The theme for the annual dinner is "Movie Night with President Obama." The short film follows President Obama's first three years in office. Narrated by Tom Hanks, it tells the story through the eyes of Michelle Obama, Vice President Biden, President Clinton, Massachusetts senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren and others.

The dinner also celebrates the unions of America, and special guests include many Nevada union leaders, as well as Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, State Treasurer Kate Marshall, State Democratic Chair Roberta Lange and Mark Nichols of the President's senior finance team in Washington, D.C.

Doors open at 5:30 for the no-host bar and preview of silent auction and raffle items. Dinner is served at 7 p.m. Menu choices include prime rib, chicken or grilled portabella mushrooms with gluten-free pasta. Cost is $65 per person.

Family Fun, Fit Day planned

Carson Valley Fit Kids Coalition, Tumbleweeds Gymnastics & Kaia F.I.T. will host their third annual Family Fun and Fit Day on March 31st at Tumbleweeds Gymnastics, 3633 Research Way #104, Carson City.

Pond startup seminar planned

The temperatures are starting to get warmer, and so is the water in home ponds. Now is the time to be thinking about annual spring maintenance and startup. Doing it right now ensures a beautiful pond to be enjoyed all summer long.

David Ruf, owner of Greenhouse Garden Center in Carson City, will give a seminar, "Spring Pond Startup" at 10 a.m. Saturday. The seminar is free and reservations are not required. The seminar may be held outdoors, so a jacket may be necessary.
