Prep Roundup: Senator baseball squad shows its resiliency

RENO - Carson High's baseball squad showed its resiliency, shaking off a lopsided loss to McQueen on Thursday, to come back and beat the Lancers 4-3 on Saturday in a Northern 4A baseball game.

Carson improved to 6-5 overall. The Senators return to action Tuesday at 3:45 at North Valleys.

Nick Domitrovich and Luke Maher led the offense with two hits apiece, and Drew Moreland turned in six strong innings on the mound before turning the ball over to Tyler Valley, who recorded the save.

"It was nice (to come back like we did)," Carson coach Cody Farnworth said. "The kid really competed. We gave Logan (Krupp) a chance today, and he came through with a hit. Moreland did a great job on the mound. He did a good job of pitching them backward."

Carson took a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat when Rory Petersen doubled home Nick Domitrovich, who had reached on a single.

After McQueen tied the game in the first, Carson went ahead 2-1 on singles by Brock Pradere and Domitrovich's run-scoring hit.

McQueen went ahead 3-2 with two in the fourth only to see Carson tie the game when Casey Wolfe singled, Carter Nuckolls walked, a sacrifice bunt by Moreland and a wild pitch.

After a scoreless fifth. Carson pushed across the winning run in the sixth on Gehrig Tucker's single.

Douglas comes back for win

MINDEN - Nolan Weintz hit a walkoff double to cap a three-run comeback and give Douglas a 6-5 comeback win over Manogue Saturday afternoon.

Douglas overcame a 10 strikeout performance from Manogue starter Devonte German and a controversial, potentially-devastating seventh inning call that took the Tigers from two runners on with none out to one runner on with two outs.

"It just says a lot about the kids' ability to bounce back and stay resilient," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "We didn't play well early on and we weren't making things happen. We gave up four unearned runs and their one earned run came on a situation we put ourselves in."

The Miners used a two-out, two-on single from Patrick Hinojosa to grab the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Douglas answered right back, though, as freshman Kaleb Foster drew a one-out walk, Cody Begovich blasted a double to left and sophomore Dillon Lopez ripped a two-run single for the 2-1 lead.

The Miners pushed a single run across in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, all unearned. It added up to a 5-2 Manogue lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

German retired Douglas' first two batters of the sixth. Matt Santos came on to pinch hit in six hole and worked the count to 2-1 before smacking a double. First baseman Jimmy King then came on and blasted a double off the left field wall, scoring Santos and cutting the score to 5-3.

Manogue replaced German to start the bottom half and Douglas freshman Cale Kynett drew a leadoff walk on four pitches to bring the top of the Tigers' order back around.

Leo Trebotich singled, moving Kynett to second and setting up one of the strangest plays at Tiger Field in several seasons.

Foster popped a 2-2 pitch high above third base, causing Miner third baseman Nick Pruneau backpedaling toward the outfield grass. Normally, with runners on first and second and no outs, the ball would have been ruled an infield fly, with Foster being called out. No call was made on the ball, though, and Pruneau allowed it to drop, which sent Kynett racing for third, where he was thrown out on an apparent force. At the same time (after the ball struck the ground), though, the home plate umpire ruled the play an infield fly, meaning both Kynett and Foster were declared out on the play.

Begovich took a pair of strikes, quickly pushing the Tigers to their final strike of the afternoon. He turned on the third pitch he saw and hit a double to right. Trebotich was held at third.

Lopez slapped the first pitch he saw into right, scoring Trebotich and Begovich to tie the game at 5. Weintz followed with his game-winner.

SOFTBALL

Douglas girls split

MINDEN - The Douglas softball team came back from a 2-0 deficit to capture its first league win Saturday morning, 7-2 over Galena.

Galena bounced back in the second game of a doubleheader with an 8-0 win to earn a split on the day.

"It was nice to get a win, it was a good confidence builder from Thursday (a narrow loss to regional favorite Spanish Springs)," Douglas coach Andy Mitchell said. "It was important for the girls to see they could win. Galena is a strong team.

"Then we came out flat in the second game. We didn't have success getting the key hits. We had balls hit hard, but right at people."

Galena jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game on a first-inning home run and a second-inning triple followed by a base hit.

Douglas got right back in the bottom of the second as Kelly Sonnemann had a one-out single and later scored on an error.

Maddy Parks hit a run-scoring double to tie the game at 2. Douglas then put together a five-run fifth and coasted on a strong outing from senior pitcher Kalee Duryee, who finished with three strikeouts and no walks.

Duryee was 2-for-4 at the plate, as was Aaliyah Paxson. Taylor McKinnon had a pair of RBIs and a double and Parks, Amanda Caras and Sonnemann each drove in a run.

In Game 2, Galena piled up its lead with a run in the second, two in the third and two in the fifth before a three-run sixth sealed it.

Douglas ran its record to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in league play on the day.

Dayton gets cross-over split

FERNLEY - Dayton recorded a split in its crossover games against Elko and Lowry Saturday afternoon.

Dayton edged Elko 2-1 in eight innings, and then dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Lowry.

In the win over Elko, Makayla Shadle struck out 15 and drove in the tying run, sending the game into extra innings.

Dayton won the game when Serena Pistilli singled and was forced at second by Kelly Combs, who came around to score on an error.

In the second game, Lowry pushed across a run in the eighth to snap a 4-all tie and win despite 16 strikeouts from Shadle.

Combs and Devlynn LaHair led the Dayton offense with two hits apiece.

Dayton hosts Yerington on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

TRACK

Bard wins high jump

FALLOW - Tylor Bard won the high jump with a leap of 6-feet at Saturday's 40th annual Elks Invitational.

The only other point scorers for the Dust Devils were Katrina Breithaupt and Kaylee Turner. Breithaupt was fourth in the 800 at 2:34 and seventh in he 1600 at 5:42. Turner was seventh in the discus at 94-5.
