Senator Square: Test-drive a car, earn money for school

Ford and Safe Grad are teaming up 9 a.m. Saturday to raise funds for graduating seniors at the Drive One 4 Your School event.

Take a test drive of a new Ford, and Ford will donate $20 back to the Safe Grad committee to help pay for the safe grad night.

Safe Grad is asking that people come early in the day for the test drives. Drivers must be legal residents of the United States, be 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.

All drivers will also be entered in a contest to win a new Ford Escape. The test drive takes less than 15 minutes.

Please come out and help this group raise enough funds for our seniors.

BROBOTS HOLDING FUNDRAISER

CHS Robotics team will be hosting a fundraiser with Chili's on Thursday. Please be sure to take a flier when you go dine. A percentage will be donated to the CHS Robotics team's travel to the World Robotics Championships.

COMMUNITY GROUPS HELP HEALTH CLASSES

Health students are getting some fabulous information from various community groups and organizations. Guest speakers from "Worth the Wait" presented students about abstinence-based decision making.

The Family Life Committee helps formulate the sex education curriculum for the school. This committee bases its curriculum around Nevada Revised Statutes and is always seeking more committee members. Contact Jenn Minifie at jminifie@carson.k12.nv.us for more information.

Washoe Pediatrics offered a "Save your Skull" presentation, educating students about the importance of helmets in sports such as skiing, snowboarding and bicycling. Washoe Pediatrics educated students on various head injuries as well.

Finally, health students get a hands-on look at the court process dealing specifically with juvenile delinquents.

Health students walked to the Juvenile Detention Center and toured the facility. While there, students were informed of the court process.

SMALL HANDS HELP GREENHOUSE

Students from Montessori Elementary recently helped harvest about 80 pounds of produce from our school's new greenhouse. The food harvested was donated to organizations in town that serve the city's needy population.

TEACHERS VS. STUDENTS

Mark your calendars for our own version of March Madness here at CHS. Teachers will take on a group of senior students in an exhibition basketball game at 6:30 p.m. April 2 in Morse Burly gymnasium. Senior students were nominated by their teachers for the honor of playing in this game.

Teachers playing in this game include Mr. Morgan, Mr. Contine, Mr. Dilley, Mr. Roselip, Mrs. Lobsinger, Mrs. Britt, Mr. Beck, Mrs. Golik, Mr. Sakelarios, Mr. Mendeguia and Mr. Ackerman.

The game is a fundraiser for students going to Washington, D.C. to see the presidential inauguration. Everyone is welcome to attend, and the cost of admission is $3. Concessions and a 50/50 raffle will be held that night to raise money for the students going on the trip.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

CHS is proud to spotlight senior Ben Drozdoff.

He maintains a weighted grade-point average of 4.8. Ben participates in tennis and golf, and is the president of the Carson High School chapter of the National Honor Society.

He participated in a program with the University of California at Berkeley where he conducted geomagnetic research, and is currently interning with Bayliss and Associates, learning about tax and wealth management.

Ben plans to attend college where he will major in International Business and go on to earn his MBA. He has been accepted to Pepperdine University, and is awaiting decisions from Harvard, Stanford, Yale, University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown, Notre Dame and Dartmouth University.

CHS is proud to call Ben a Senator, and we are excited to see what he will do in the future.

New fact: In the late '90s, this teacher took boys basketball club teams to Hong Kong, Greece and Denmark.
