PREPS: Carson pounds North Valleys

RENO - Carson High won its second straight game, knocking off North Valleys 14-7 Tuesday afternoon in a Northern 4A game.

Carson improved to 5-2, and will host the Panthers Thursday at 3:45 p.m. at Ron McNutt Field.

Eleven players collected at last one hit, as the Senators garnered 19 hits. Gehrig Tucker led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Brock Pradere, Rory Petersen, T.J. Thomsen, Nick Domitrovich, Casey Wolfe and Luke Maher all had two hits each. Domitrovich drove in three runs, while Maher and Pradere drove in two apiece.

Carson scored one in the first on Domitrovich's sacrifice fly.

Charlie Banfield was touched for three runs, two earned in the bottom of the inning.

"They are not a bad-hitting team," Carson coach Cody Farnworth said. "He got his fastball up. He started throwing more off-speed stuff and that seemed to work."

Carson took control in the fourth, scoring nine times.

Domitrovich doubled and scored on a single by Maher, who moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Rory Petersen. Casey Wolfe followed with a single, and Dion Copoulos' single drove in Petersen. Drew Moreland reached on a bunt single and Tucker followed with a run-scoring single. Pradere doubled home two runs and Domitrovich drove in his second run of the inning with a single. Maher followed with his second hit of the inning.

Carson would add two more in the fifth and seventh innings.

North Valleys scored four in the seventh on five hits. All four runs that inning were unearned.

"Hitting was contagious at that point (in the fourth)," Farnworth said. "Some were hard hit and some just fell in."

McQueen nips Douglas

The Douglas baseball team's defense turned in a flawless effort and junior pitcher Nolan Weintz enjoyed the finest outing of his varsity career Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field in Minden.

McQueen lefty Christian Stolo, an early candidate for the Northern 4A's Pitcher of the Year, was too much for the Tiger bats to handle, though, as the Lancers stole away a 1-0 win.

In what was otherwise a pitcher's duel, most of the action in the scorebook came in the first inning.

The Lancers' Anthony Calton hit a one-out double to deep left in the top of the first. Kody Reynolds followed by ripping a double just inside the foul line behind third base for the 1-0 lead.

Weintz got out of the inning on a sacrifice bunt moving Reynolds to third and the first of his five strikeouts on the afternoon.

Stolo stuck out the first batter he saw in the bottom half before freshman catcher Kaleb Foster reached on an error. Tiger senior Cody Begovich hit a slow-rolling infield single toward short and Weintz later loaded the bases by drawing a two-out walk. Stolo got out of the early jam, however, by inducing a fielder's choice to third, with Foster being thrown out at home.

From there, both pitchers settled into a rhythm.

Weintz surrendered only a one-out single in the top of the fourth and a leadoff single in the top of the seventh.

Stolo retired 13 consecutive batters before walking Trebotich to open the bottom of the sixth.

Trebotich took second on a wild pitch to Foster, and advanced to third on yet another wild pitch in the same at bat.

Stolo was able to induce a fielder's choice, though, and Trebotich was thrown out at home.

Stolo retired Douglas' final five batters in order.

He finished with 10 strikeouts and only two walks. Douglas had just four baserunners on the afternoon.

Douglas dropped to 2-3 in Northern 4A action with the loss. The Tigers will travel to McQueen Thursday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. to wrap up the series.

Dust Devils pounded by Lions

DAYTON - Yerington grabbed an early 5-2 lead and coasted to a 10-3 win over Dayton in a Northern 3A baseball game Tuesday afternoon.

Dayton returns to action Friday at home against South Tahoe at 4 p.m. On Saturday in Fallon, Dayton will face Sparks at noon and Truckee at 2 p.m.

Chase Ogolin's three-run homer sparked the five-run fifth inning and increased the Lions' lead to 9-2.

Sam Hadley each went 2-for-4 for Dayton, while Hunter Roberts went 1-for-3 with a run-scoring double.

SOFTBALL

Dust Devils waste Shadle gem

DAYTON - Makayla Shadle struck out 21 batters, but three errors in the 12th inning enabled Yerington to score three runs to break a scoreless tie and grab a 3-0 Northern 3A victory.

Dayton hosts South Tahoe Friday and plays two games in Fallon on Saturday.

Shadle allowed three runs and four hits, but it wasn't enough as Katie Nicholas blanked the Dust Devils on seven hits for her second win this year against Dayton.

Cheyanna Burrows had three of Dayton's seven hits, a double and two singles. Shadle added two singles.

GOLF

Carson golfers fourth

RENO - Carson High's golf team finished fourth in the second Sierra League tournament of the season.

The Senators, led by Roman Smokey's 82, shot a 477 at Rosewood Lakes. Bishop Manogue, led by medalist Harrison Holetz's 75, won for the second straight week, carding a 409. Galena was second with a 444 and Douglas was third with a 462.

Smokey finished fifth overall.

Danny Manning had the second-lowest score for Carson with a 94, while Nate Brown and Dalton Butler each shot 100s. Ben Drozdoff shot a 101.

"The scoring conditions weren't good," Carson coach Jeff Rispin said. "I did expect a little more out of some of the other players. Roman put together a good round."

Carson returns to action next Monday at noon at Genoa Lakes.
