PREPS: Carson girls lose third straight

Carson High's softball team, despite a nice pitching and hitting effort by Jen Purcell, dropped a 4-2 non-league decision to Fallon hursday afternoon.

The Senators, who have lost three straight, will attempt to end the skid today when they visit Wooster at 3:45 p.m.

Purcell went 3-for-3 with a run-scoring double in the fourth to go along with singles in the second and sixth.

On the mound, Purcell fanned seven and walked two while giving up three hits. Only one of Fallon's runs was unearned.

Fallon took a 2-0 lead in the first when Danielle Rothery homered.

Purcell's double in the fourth made it 2-1, and Christa McGahuey's sacrifice fly in the fifth knotted the game at 2.

An error and passed ball accounted for Fallon's last two runs.

Jill Pinder got the win for Fallon. She allowed two runs in 4.2 innings of work.

Tigers lose to Reno

RENO - On one hand, the Douglas baseball team gave up more runs in a game Thursday than it had in several years.

On the other, the Tigers broke out of an offensive slump and put up six runs on nine hits.

It added up to a 20-6 loss to Reno High School, but Spanish Springs' loss to McQueen Thursday left the Tigers in control of their own destiny for the playoffs.

If Douglas can knock off Reno in Minden today, the Tigers clinch the eighth and final playoff spot. If Douglas loses, and Spanish Springs loses, the Tigers still get in via the tiebreaker.

"It was good to see some offense, that's what we're focusing on," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "What we saw late in the game today gives us a glimpse of hope. Hopefully we can parlay that into tomorrow and get ourselves into the playoffs."

Reno put up 15 runs over the first two innings to take an insurmountable lead Thursday.

Dalton Grisell came on in relief and pitched a scoreless third. Then Douglas started stringing some hits together.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the fourth and got three hits in a row to generate its runs.

"It's something we basically haven't done in three weeks," Jacobsen said. "We got one right after another right after another and that was good to see. We did some good things today."

Joe Almeida recorded his first varsity hit and RBI and Kaleb Foster hit a three-run double.
