Senator Square: Brobots team finishes 13th at World Robotics event

Adam Whatley's Brobots Robotics team just returned from the World Robotics Competition in St. Louis, Mo.

They competed against 128 teams from 20 countries over a four-day period. There were eight rounds of competition, in which they won six and lost two. Their win/loss record placed them 13th overall.

Members of the team include Ryan Schmid, Porfirio Jauregui, Sean Lopez, Andrea Muzio, and Zach Rogers.

This is truly an amazing accomplishment for a rookie team that had never participated in robotics before and then walked away13th in the world.

Whatley said the trip was an eye-opener in many ways for the students, citing specifically the diverse population of international students at the event.

Whatley said special thanks go out to the Hope and Mae Adams Foundation and Carson High School, both of which provided much of the funding for this trip. Without their financial assistance, the kids would not have been able to participate! CHS is so proud of the Brobots! Way to go, guys, and we are so excited for the future of the robotics club!

WHATLEY AWARDED

We are so proud that Adam Whatley, our very own English and technology teacher here at CHS, was just awarded the Educator of the Year for Carson City School District. Congrats to a very deserving teacher!

PROM RESULTS

Prom was a huge success and we'd like to congratulate Kaitlyn Holmes and Dion Copolous for being crowned Queen and King.

BIOLOGY STUDENTS INTHE COMMUNITY

On April 30, three high school biology classes went to the Carson River to teach all the fourth-graders at Empire Elementary School. They taught them about invasive weeds, invasive beavers, water quality, Carson River watershed and the animals that live there.

The student planted native seeds, wrapped Cottonwood trees to protect them from the beavers and conducted water tests. Also, some of the high school students fixed the CHS Interpretive Trail: Biology at the River. They put new arrow posts in, so visitors could more easily follow the trail. Previously, Mrs. Koop's biology students had built maintained and wrote a guided interpretive trail that includes educational information with twelve posts to stop and learn at.

Presently, honors biology students are creating a new map and water data graphs for the trail sign. Please visit this beautiful and important area located at The Ambrose Natural Area on Deer Run Road, south of Highway 50.

FORMER CHS GRAD COMPETES IN OPEN QUALIFIER

Conrad Burt, graduate of CHS from the class of 2003, will compete on Monday in the U.S. Open Qualifier to be held at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club and Resort. Burt is also a long-term sub at Carson High School. He recently completed a long-term sub position at Eagle Valley Middle School, as well. Conrad was a member of the CHS golf team.

Good Luck to Conrad as he pursues a life-long dream of competing professionally.

CLS CLASSES FIELD TRIP

The Comprehensive Life Skills class taught and directed by Valentino Midboe visited the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum in Reno on Friday. Ten CLS students were able to tour this fantastic museum with the aid and help of multiple CHS students.

Heather Canfield, Jason Duerk, Amber Mendoza, Vanessa Guzmall, Shania Hicks, Julie Nauyoks, Meghan Sparks, Brooklyn Maw, Lydia Carel, Stephanie Rodriguez, Samantha Schultz, Dani Garret, Kat Fulwider, Perla Zepeda, Maria Gonzales, Sommer Rollencamp, and Jacob Shaward all attended and helped the CLS students discover the museum.

GUIDANCE OFFICE NEWS

Attention, students: May 7 will be the last day that work-experience hours will be accepted for the year. Juniors and sophomores must keep their pay stubs during the summer and turn them in to their counselor at the beginning of next year.

Scholarship night is coming up at CHS. Seniors awarded scholarships will be recognized and honored on May 24 at 6 p.m. in Senator Square.

TEACHER APPRECIATION EVENTS

May 7 - 11 is Teacher Appreciation Week across the country, with May 8 being National Teacher Day. Say thanks to a teacher this week!

NURSE APPRECIATION WEEK

This week is also National Nurse's Week. We'd like to say a special thanks to our nurses Sheila Story and Wendy Bacon who serve over 2,400 students here at CHS. Thanks for all the work you do each day.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

CHS is proud to spotlight senior Drew Moreland. His classes currently include AP calculus, honors chemistry, AP government, and AP English literature. He maintains a weighted GPA of 4.55. Drew participates in varsity baseball, basketball, and National Honor Society. He has also been a CHS math tutor. For his senior project, Drew coached a seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball team for the Carson City Recreation League. Drew will attend Washington State University and major in accounting and possibly a double major with finance.  He received the Washington State Cougar Academic Award for $9,000 per year.  We are appreciative of Drew's contributions to CHS both athletically and academically, and wish him luck at WSU.
