CHS golfers place third; Brown qualifies for state

DAYTON - Carson High's golf team shot its best round of the season, but it wasn't quite enough.

The Senators, led by Nate Brown's career-best even-par 72, shot a 396 en route to a third-place finish at the NIAA 4A regional golf tournament at Dayton Valley Golf Club.

Despite the team's best round, it wasn't able to catch Spanish Springs for the second and final spot in the state tournament.

Bishop Manogue won the event with a two-day total of 745, while Spanish Springs shot an 810. Carson was third at 825 and Galena was fourth with an 827.

Brown made it to state as an individual with a 36-hole total of 153.

"He (Brown knows the course and he putted real well," Carson coach Jeff Rispin said. "The whole team played great. I'm really proud of them.

"I told them I expected a 410 and they shot 396. It was a great effort. We bettered our score by 33 strokes and didn't gain a stroke."

Roman Smokey shot a 79, Andy Cooper 82, Austin Pacheco 82 and Sam Bruketta a season-best 81.

BASEBALL

Stolo handcuffs Douglas

RENO - Christian Stolo was the last pitcher the Douglas baseball team wanted to see to open the regional playoffs.

The senior lefty became the first pitcher to no-hit the Tigers in years earlier this season and wasted little time continuing his dominance Tuesday afternoon at McQueen High School.

Stolo struck out six of the first seven batters he saw and McQueen's offense built an early lead to support him as the Lancers cruised to a 9-2 win.

"It's not the way you want to start the playoffs," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "But we're back at it tomorrow and it's as good a scenario as we could have hoped for with a loss. We like playing at Carson and you have the rivalry which plays a big part in it. We're just trying to extend the season at this point."

For his part, Stolo extended Douglas' hitless streak against him to nine innings before allowing a base runner Tuesday. He finished with nine strikeouts and two walks while scattering five hits and two runs.

The Lancers rang up three runs on three hits with its first three batters in the opening frame as Kody Reynolds hit a three-run home run.

Reynolds finished 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs.

The Lancers pushed another run across in the bottom of the third for the 4-0 lead, but Douglas' Cody Begovich hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to get Douglas briefly back into the game.

McQueen, though, answered with a five-run fourth and cruised from there.

Douglas' best shot to cut the score back down came in the top of the sixth. Leo Trebotich hit a one-out single and Kaleb Foster followed with a single of his own. Nolan Weintz rolled into a fielder's choice, moving the runners to second and third and Begovich doubled to score Trebotich. Cole Peck then drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but McQueen ended the threat with a strikeout.

"We got down and then battled back," Jacobsen said. "We had an opportunity to get back in the game. That's what these kids have done all year."
