COMMUNITY: Nevada Wonders advance to soccer regionals

The Nevada Wonders, a local high-school-aged soccer team, beat Las Vegas Soccer Academy Red 5-4 en route to a second-place finish at the state tournament.

LVSA took a 1-0 lead, but a goal by Michelle Sandage tied the game at 1. After playing two 15-minute overtime periods, Carson got successful penalty kicks from Alissa Hayes, Bri McCord, Lexi Weaver, Jaime Perez and Sandage to take the lead. The game ended with Wonders goalie Emmy Heller blocking a penalty shot.

The Wonders were missing three players for the championship game and lost 5-0 to a different Las Vegas team.

The U17 girls' team consists of: Shannon Flaherty, Hayes, Weaver, Ericka Arellanos, Perez, Camry Varble, Kassidy Freitas, Heller, Lindsay Hettrick, April Hoogendijk, Jamie King, Katherine Leist, McCord; Gabriele Vega and Sandage.

The team is led by head coach Randy Roser with assistants Cassie Carter, Mike Bernhard, Landon Roser, and Brady Roser.

With the win over LVSA '95 Red, the Wonder's team will now compete at the Far West Regionals, June 18-23 in Phoenix, AZ. But entertaining the dream is expensive. The team is attempting to raise monies in order to ease the burden of traveling expenses as they compete for a spot in the National Championship series. Warner is Thursday

Carson City Pop Warner football and cheerleading will be holding a sign-up session May 24th at the Carson Mall from 5 to 9 p.m.

Summer tennis clinics

at Centennial Park

Diane Roberts, the Carson High tennis coach, is holding summer clinics at Centennial Park.

Weekly sessions begin June 11, and each clinic meets Monday through Thursday.

Boys and girls between 4 and 6 years old, will meet from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The cost is $8 per day or $30 for the week. For players between 7 and 10, there will be a 90-minute lesson each day and the cost is $15 per day or $55 per week.

Basketball camp at

Carson Middle

A summer camp has been scheduled for Carson Middle School June 4-7. The camp is being run by middle school coaches John Paulson and Doug Whisler.

The camp is open to boys and girls entering grade four through nine. The girls camp runs each day from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and the boys clinic runs from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m each day,

junior golf clinics

Dayton Valley Golf Club is hosting a series of junior golf clinics with instructor Marc Halverson.

The June clinic is from 4 to 5 p.m. on June 1, 3, 8, 10, 15 and 17. Each six-clinic package costs $65. Drop-in cost for a session is $15,

The second clinic is June 29 and July 1, 6, 8, 13 and 15, also from 4 to 5 p.m. The August clinic dates are 3rd, 5th, 10th, 12th, 17th and 19th.

First Tee events set

for Silver Oak GC

Elementary students from Fritsch and Borewich-Bray will visit Silver Oak golf course this week to participate in the First Tee National School Program.

On Thursday, Fritsch students will be at Silver Oak from 9 to 11 a.m., and on Friday Bordewich-Bray students will be at Silver Oak from 9 to 11 a.m.

The First Tee of Northern Nevada is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community youth development organization dedicated to providing young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship.

Silver Oak event

Ray Moore and Luther Best shot a gross 62 to win teh Silver Oak Men's Club 6-6-6 event on May 15.

Alex Talmant and Bob Lewis were next with a 63 and Bill Challenger teamed with Wayne Feletar for 64 and third place. Terry Thoma and Tony Barbaria tied with Jim Silsby and Don Fox for fourth place. Both teams shot 64s.

On May 134, Best and Gerald Greiner shot a gross 62 to win the Sunday Men's 6-6-6 format. John Owens and Jim Sapien were second at 63, while the teams of Phil Doss and Jason Cooper, Kevin and Larry Johnson, and Dale Dowd and Bill Whitstone tied for third with 64s.

John Masiello, Jim Green, John Lewis and Nick Paul combind for a net 47 to win Flight A at the Empire Ranch Senior Men's Club four-man scramble on May 16.

Verne Rosse, Lew Dodgion, James Barnett and Richard Schaible were second with a 48.

John Sullivan David Aalbers, Fred Perdomo and George Allison won B Flight with a 51, while Charles Bell, Robert Blom, Paul Weller and Frank Romano were second with a 51.

The annual Carson Valley Days golf tournament is scheduled for June 7 at Carson Valley Golf Club at 8:30 a.m.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shot gun start a 8:30 a.m. The cost is $90 per player, which includes tri-tip and chicken luncheon, awards ceremonyand golf/cart.
