Halloween brings out devils, superheroes and the governor

The reasoning for a Halloween visit to the Nevada Governor’s Mansion varied. Whitney Bibee, 12, came because her dad wanted her to, although dressing as an ’80s girl was completely her idea.For Miah Aragon, 9, it’s all about the tradition: It’s her ninth time coming to the mansion to trick-or-treat, even though she doesn’t remember the very first time, when then-Gov. Kenny Guinn was handing out Halloween treats.Miah dressed this year as Morticia, of “The Addams Family” fame, with black hair and black eyeshadow and wearing a light gauzy dress.“I was running out of time,” she said. Miah originally wanted to be a werewolf but when she saw the Morticia costume, she was sold. “I want it, I want it,” she had said, jumping up and down.The trick-or-treaters snaked only a little ways down the fence on the Robinson Street side the Governor’s Mansion, although Mountain Street was closed in front of the mansion, as well as Robinson.Miah’s friend Morgan Craghill, 9, a blue roadrunner with a Wiley Coyote candy bag, is in Miah’s class. Morgan came to the mansion because “they made me,” she said, referring to the two parents with her and Miah.Sabrina Jones, dressed as a little vampire “because it’s scary,” was shy — but not shy enough to miss her chance to have her picture taken with Gov. Brian Sandoval and the first lady, Kathleen. She also was surprised by the amount of candy. Expecting a single piece, instead she was given a handful, just like every child in line.Her picture with the governor will be available for her or her parents on the governor’s website for free at gov.nv.gov, taken by the state’s photographer, said Mary-Sarah Kinner, the governor’s press secretary.Madisen Aragon, dressed as a light-blue fairy, came because she wanted to meet the governor, and he met her expectations.“I expected a nice, kind man who’s dressed fancy,” she said. The governor, in a blue sweater and a button-up collared shirt, was dressed the part. Sandoval recalled that as a seven-year-old at Halloween, his favorite costume was a mummy.“My mom tore up strips of a sheet” to make the bandages for the mummy costume, he said.
