Prep roundup: Carson teams place 5th and 7th at state meet

HENDERSON — The Carson High boys cross country team ran its way to a seventh-place finish during Saturday’s NIAA Division I state meet.Senior Nick Greene led Carson with a 39th place overall finish (17:52). Anthony Cacioppo, Daniel Jauregui, Chris Merriner and Porfirio Jauregui finished 54th, 55th, 56th and 57th respectively for the Senators.“The boys ran a pretty good race,” said coach Pete Sinnott. “They got out too slow. They ran good — ran as good as they could.”Sinnott said the pack mentality was good, but the boys needed to finish in the 20s not the 50s. Centennial (27 points) won the boys race, followed by Galena (44), Coronado (101), Shadow Ridge (117), Douglas (130), Palo Verde (133) and Carson (193 points).Douglas was led by Brandon Pankey who finished 26th in 17:30.In the Division 1A boys race, Dayton’s Aaron Elissa (17:41) and Joe Law (17:58) were 11th and 19th respectively. In the Division 3/4 boys race, Sierra Lutheran (106 points) finished fourth behind North Tahoe (19), Incline and Sage Ridge. Incline took first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh en route to an easy win. Donovan Harrison led the Falcons with a ninth-place finish in 17:52. Weston Stulac was 20th in 18:47, Chris Eckert was 23rd in 18:58, Joel Henry was 32nd in 19:56 and Seth Cariga was 35th in 21:04. Girls finish fifthAlex Drozdoff led the Carson girls team to a fifth place finish during Saturday’s meet. Drozdoff finished sixth overall in 20:34. She was followed by freshman Evelyn Delgado in 18th place (21:14). Cindy Juchtzer (21:42) was 28th, Shelby Brown (21:58) was 33rd and Athena Favero was 56th in 22:50.Sinnott said Delgado ran a strong race, despite having a cold. He said if she was at 100 percent, he thought she would have been top 10. Without any seniors, this race was a learning experience for the Senators, who are likely the early favorites to capture the north title next year. He said the girls started the year nine minutes behind Galena, but were able to get that down to under a minute during Saturday’s race.“We don’t want to start next year behind anyone,” Sinnott said. “We want to start next year ahead and then improve nine minutes.”In the Division 1A girls race, Dayton’s Katrina Breithaupt finished sixth in 20:48.In the Division 3/4 girls side, Sierra Lutheran was fourth behind Incline, North Tahoe and The Meadows.Erin Henry led the Falcons running in 22:32.7 finishing 10th. Rebekah Churchill was 21st in 25:14, Abby Williams (25.22), Alesha Martinez and Heather Kubel were 23rd, 24th and 25th respectively. Virginia City, 6th overall, was led by Tobi Steele in 19th place. VOLLEYBALLVC wins Division IV titleELKO — Virginia City came from a 2-0 deficit to win three straight games against Smith Valley and win the NIAA Division IV championship Saturday afternoon.Virginia City lost 12-25 and 25-27 before winning 25-23, 25-11 and 15-13. The Muckers reached the final game by beating Eureka 25-19, 26-24 and 26-24 on Friday, and following that up with a 25-19, 25-21, 18-25 and 25-16 win over Coleville in the finals.VC advances to the state tournament on Friday at 4:40 against Alamo at Damonte Ranch High School. The match will start at 4:40 p.m.“The girls never quit,” VC coach Dennis Young said. “They kept battling. We started playing together as a team. The first two games we were really awful. We made a lot of mistakes. In the third game we played well, the fourth game we got better and the fifth game we played really well.”In the Smith Valley match, Jamie Poston had 11 kills, three assists and 20 digs. Nikki D’Agostino had nine kills and five digs, Lea Laney had five kills and13 digs, Nicole Huffman contributed 26 assists and four digs and Corinna Obermayr had six kills and 11 digs.Against Eureka, Poston had four kills and 11 digs, while Obermayr had three kills and seven digs.Dayton loses thriller in semisSOUTH LAKE TAHOE — Dayton was eliminated in the semifinals of the Division IA tournament in four games by Truckee.Truckee took the first two games, 25-19 and 25-13, but Dayton roared back to tie the match after a 25-19 and 25-12 win in the third and fourth games. Truckee won the fifth set 18-16.My team almost took down Truckee from their throne,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “It was a great way to end our season. They played their hearts out. Too bad they have to have a loser/winner.“We came out flat the first game. We had a lot of simple mistakes and a lack of communication. The second game was really slow, and we had some good plays but we really weren’t a threat. My team finally arrived in the third game and really made them work. We played well together and didn’t let them take the third game.”Madison Foley led Dayton with 27 kills and 36 digs, while Ashley Vickers added 15 kills and 14 digs. Peach Coons had 22 assists, eight digs, three kills and two aces. Taryn Schriner added 15 kills and Cheyenne Stron finished with two kills, four blocks and two digs.
