WNC News & Notes: Watercolor exhibit offers vivid colors, healing images

Reno artists Penny Pemberton and Carol J. Neel present their own interpretations of life’s experiences and methods of healing in a watercolor exhibit, “Journeys: Masked, Poured & Reduced,” at Western Nevada College Carson City. The exhibit continues through Jan. 25, in the College Gallery. Pemberton and Neel are award-winning artists who work in watercolor and printmaking. They both also had health care careers. Pemberton was born and raised in Yerington, and became a pediatrician who practiced in Northern Nevada for 30 years. Neel was raised in Southern California, and worked in nearly all areas of medical-surgical nursing, and nurse education. Much of their artwork can be found in patient rooms at Renown Regional Medical Center, as well as in homes and businesses.“When we look around us and experience what we see rather than just ‘see it,’ that moment of discovery is a journey in time,” Neel said. “When we paint it, we remember and relive that moment with every brush stroke, line, value distinction and color choice. The journey then continues as we paint. The original vision we experienced becomes transformed into a new vision of our own creation.”“My exploration into the artistic world evolved as an integral progression on my journey as a member of the healing arts,” said Pemberton. “In retirement, I continue on my journey into the transformation of becoming a ‘Healing Artist.’ I produce art that I like, for my enjoyment, but it is always rewarding when others enjoy it as well.”The exhibit is open weekdays, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.Construction certification classes enhance job skillsNoncredit industry certification classes are being offered this fall to help students gain credentials to find work or expand their employment skills. Concrete Field Technician Certification is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 10 and 17, in Carson City. It is intended for those who want to learn to properly perform and record the results of seven basic field tests on freshly mixed concrete. Cost is $200 for WNC students; individuals not enrolled in the college should contact Dr. Haytham Mahmoud at 775-445-3352. An ACI membership and certification exam is included.LEED Green Associate Certification will be offered 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Dec. 1, in Carson City. The class will teach individuals about green design, construction and operations, and prepare them for certification as a green building expert. Cost is $225, and includes lunch. To register, visit www.campusce.net/wnc/Talent contest offers an evening of entertainmentWestern Nevada College's Latino Student Club will host a fundraising event from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, at the Carson Nugget that brings the community together for an evening of cultural entertainment. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students with a school ID, $4 for children 5-12, and free for children younger than 5. All proceeds support WNC student scholarships. “The Latino Student Club is proud to bring this contest to the community for the fifth year,” says Lupe Ramirez, WNC Latino Outreach coordinator. “It’s a family event that brings a lot of different cultures together, and it’s a wonderful way to experience and embrace diversity. It’s an opportunity for people to express themselves, and this year we are adding some comedy to the mix. Art show benefits Austin’s House, student scholarshipThe newly formed Western Nevada College Douglas Diversity Student Club will have its first event, an art show/silent auction 6-8:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Douglas campus, 1680 Bently Parkway, Minden.Tickets are $4 for adults, with children 12 and younger admitted free. Refreshments will be provided.
