PREPS: Carson girls blank Galena

RENO - Carson High's girls soccer team avenged the only blemish on its record with a 3-0 win over Galena on Tuesday afternoon.

The teams battled to a 1-all tie on Sept. 7. Carson is now 9-0-1.

"Sometimes we take a few minutes to settle down and play our game," coach Greg Lehman said. "Today, we focused on maintaining possession early."

Kenzie Tillitt opened the scoring in the 13th minute off a long ball from Katherine Leist. Eighteen minutes later, Tillitt scored again when the Galena keeper misplayed the shot. Carson scored again five minutes later when Michelle Sandage found the back of the net on a low cross from Carla Reyes.

Emmy Heller posted the shutout with help from Shannon Flaherty, Leist, Bailee Zuber, Jaime King, Allysa Hayes and Lindy Lehman.

• The Carson JV team posted a 4-0 win thanks to two first-half goals by Madison Preston and one by Kim Reyes. All three goals were scored in the first 25 minutes. Andrea Maffei assisted on one of Preston's goals.

Arlette Mariscal scored in the 57th minute off an assist by Melissa Glanzman. Josie Veneziano and Reyes combined for the shutout.

Carson golfers place third

GENOA - Carson High placed third at the final regular-season Sierra League tournament of the season Tuesday afternoon at Genoa Lake's Lake course.

Douglas won with a 374 and Bishop Manogue followed with a 389, Carson was next at 391 followed by Galena and Wooster.

Carson will advance to next week's regional playoffs as a team. The two-day regional playoff will be held at Sierra Sage in Stead.

Heather Evans led Carson with an 89 followed by Callen Aten with a 94. Taylor Krupp had a 100 and Erica Gallegos shot a 108. Ashley Andreas had a non-scoring 109.

CROSS COUNTRY

Carson boys win JV event

SPARKS - Carson placed four runners in the top-10 en route to easily winning the Reed JV Invitational Tuesday afternoon.

Carson finished with 41, 16 points ahead of Reno's 57. Locally, Sierra Lutheran was fourth with 113 and Douglas was eighth with a 208.

Ian Van Rensselaer finished sixth overall in 20:50 followed by Craig Smith (20:56) and Michael Leken (20:58). Wyatt Cartier was 10th in 21:06, while Tony Xie was 15th in 21:24.

The JV girls placed sixth with 141 points. Reno won with 49 points. Sammy Phelps led Carson with a 27:32 which was good for 19th overall. Lake Shank was 25th in 27:57 and Lauren Weddell was 26th in 28:09. Lexi Paxton was 28:56 for 35th place.
