Miners dominate Carson in 3

Carson coach Robert Maw said he saw improvement in his team, but it wasn't near enough to stop Bishop Manogue on Thursday night.

Manogue, led by Morgan Carlson, Shannon Sullivan, Kelsie Hill and Katelyn Oppio had a field day hitting against Carson in the 25-21, 25-19 and 25-7 victory at Morse Burley Gym.

"I thought we played better tonight than we did the last time we played them," Maw said. "We played much better than we did the last two matches.

"They are a well disciplined team, and we weren't able to shut down their outside hitters (Hill and Sullivan) tonight. We weren't quick enough to put up a block. We couldn't make that adjustment."

Carson played a solid opening game, building leads of 7-3 and 15-10 thanks to two kills by Kammy Forrest, one by Kenzie Price and an ace by Courtney Hack.

Bishop Manogue took control, scoring nine of the next 11 points for a 19-17 lead as Carlson had two kill and Hill had one in that stretch. Carson had three hitting errors and a service error in that span.

Carson cut the lead to 19-18 on a Manogue service error, but the Miners closed the game by scoring six of the final nine points. Hill had two more kills, while Sullivan and Carlson had one each. Carson contributed two more turnovers.

Carlson had five of her seven kills in the opening game, while Hill added four.

"I thought if we didn't allow them any runs of more than four or five points we'd have a chance to win," Maw said.

Carson stayed close in the second game, but led just once at 3-2. Two kills by Gabby Palazzolo and one each by Hack and Marlene Quirarte cut Manogue's lead to 18-17. Manogue went on a 4-0 run, three of the points coming on kills by Sullivan and one on an ace by Hill. Carson got as close as four, 22-18 and 23-19, but Manogue closed it out on a tip by Sullivan and a double-hit by Carson.

Game 3? Carson never should have taken the floor. It was a massacre from start to finish. Manogue had a seven-point run to take a 12-3, a six-point run to make it 18-4 and a 7-1 run to close out the game and match.

Sullivan had seven of her 16 kills in the game, while Oppio came off the bench for four kills.

Forrest led Carson with five kills and 2.5 blocks, while Kenzie Price had 11 assists, three kills and two blocks. Hack, who suffered an injury late in the match after taking a spike off her wrist, had three digs and eight assists. Savannah Smith finished with a 11 digs, while Danielle Good had six digs and four kills.

Carson hosts Spanish Springs at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
