The United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierras, in conjunction with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and the Northern Nevada Alzheimer’s Association, will hold training to volunteers and family caregivers to assist in the care of Alzheimer’s patients from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday in room 102 of the Reynolds Center at Western Nevada College.The Respite Care Program is part of RSVP’s Independent Living Programs with a mission to assist homebound seniors to remain independent and in their own homes as long as possible. The program relieves caregivers who provide full-time care to their loved ones. Respite also provides the one being cared for with someone new to spend time with to share stories and thoughts. This service is free of charge; however, donations are accepted.The discussion will focus on understanding communication and challenging behaviors associated with the disease and how to make a connection with someone with dementia. A review past sessions will be provided. Family and volunteer caregivers will have the opportunity to interact and share experiences.
