When Adams and Cassidy spoke at Candelaria an attempt was made to fire anvils and hoist the American flag. The man who was to give the salute got drunk and lost his powder. When the Stars and Stripes were run up on a liberty pole, the insulted timber broke off square at the base. Old Wheel Horses of the party who believe in the "signs of heaven" shook their heads and said: "The elements are agin' us."

During the work of tearing up the old railroad track between Corinne, Utah and Lucin for use for war purposes, the old fish plates at Promontory, where Leland Stanford drove through the golden spike, were salvaged. The golden spike plate was presented to Robert A. Allen of Carson City for the museum. The plates will be delivered in person.

The state highway engineer said today the contract for construction of the first four-lane freeway segment between Las Vegas and the Nevada Test Site at Mercury will be awarded before next May. The $9 million dollar appropriation from Congress will widen the "widow maker," U.S. Highway 95.
