Wooster High's soccer team invaded Carson City Saturday morning with the best defenses in Northern Nevada boys soccer.

Carson (6-4-5) managed to grind out a goal in each half to come away with a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Colts in a big Sierra League match-up.

Carson took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when Francisco Barrios came out of a crowd to head in a corner kick from Robert Abundis.

The Senators made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Barrios beat a Wooster defender and lobbed a shot over the head of the keeper.

Carson almost scored in the 73rd minute, but Adam Shoaf's shot hit the post.

Wooster was awarded a free kick in the 75th minute and converted, cutting the Carson lead to 2-1. The Colts kept the pressure on, but Carlos Alvarado, Zach Smith, Michael Samii, Cruz Kerver, goalie Jose Gonzalez and Miguel Ortiz kept the Colts from finding the back of the net.

Coach Mehdi Samii also lauded the play of Daniel Zuber, Mario Escalante, Jon Guevara and Nate King.

The Carson JV squad lost 2-0.

Carson girls breeze

Danielle Sandage, Michelle Sandage, Karla Reyes and Chantal Torres all scored goals to lead Carson to a 4-0 win over Wooster on Saturday afternoon.

Carson improved to 13-0-2 heading into Monday's game against Douglas.

Danielle Sandage scored 38 seconds into the match off a pass from her sister, Michelle. About 9 1/2 minutes later, Reyes cored unassisted to make it 2-0.

In the 56th minute, Michelle Sandage made it 3- 0 and Torres added the fourth and final goal in the 67th minute.

Emmy Heller posted the shut out.

• In the JV game, Carson won 7-0.

Mariah Merriner scored in the 5th minute on a corner kick from Theresa Boehmer. Three minutes later, Lydia Cohen scored on an assist from Abbey Greene. Merriner added another goal in the 17th minute to make it 3-0. Melissa Glanzman made it 4-0 off an assist by Josie Veneziano.

Andrea Maffei, Glanzman and Katie Roll scored in the second half.

CROSS COUNTRY

Dayton boys take second

GARDNERVILLE- Dayton High's boys cross-country team finished second out of 12 teams at the weekly Division IA race at Lampe Park.

Aaron Elissa was second in 17:49, Joe Law was sixth in 18:20 and Skyler Rose was seventh in 18:22. Nick Langstaff was 25th in 19:30 and Philip Hevener was 30th in 19:47.

In the JV boys race, Mitchell Fialkowski was seventh in 22:56 and Thomas Little was 10th in 23:44.

Katrina Breithaupt won the girls race, running 21:10. Teammate Hanna Elissa was 22nd in 25:24.

VOLLEYBALL

Virginia City sweeps

RENO - Virginia City easily swept Sage Ridge 25-10, 25-13 and 25-11 Friday in a Division IV volleyball match.

Jamie Poston had 11 kills and 15 digs, while Corinna Obermayr added seven kills, 11 digs and three aces, Nikki D'Agostino added six kills and one dig. Keana Prohl finished with five kills and three digs. Setter Nicole Huffman had 20 assists and four digs.

On Saturday, VC topped Smith Valley 13-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 and 15-12. Poston had 11 kills and 24 digs, while Obermayr had seven kills and 12 digs. D'Agostino had 10 kills and two digs with Huffman contributing 25 assists.

VC is 11-1 and 19-3 respectively.

The JV won 25-10 and 25-18 and lost 28-26 and 25-17 on Saturday to Smith Valley.

Dayton dropped by Fernley

FERNLEY - The Vaqueros won two of the last three sets to beat Dayton 25-16, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-19 Saturday afternoon.

Madison Foley led Dayton with 12 kills and 10 digs, while Ashley Vickers had seven kills and 14 digs. Taryn Schriner finished with 21 kills. Peach Coons had four digs, 15 assists and five aces. Alyse Fletcher had five digs, nine assists and a kill.

"My team played a great game against the Vaqueros today," Dayton coach Monica Halverson. "We had to do some adjusting when Madi Foley came out with a back injury (pinched nerve). She sat the rest of the match.

"We had great serves and my front line really stepped up and shut down their offense. Lettie Lynch also did well and saw the court and placed a lot of tips for her kills."

Dayton hosts Fernley on Monday.
