Senator Square: Rivalry week at Carson High — beat Douglas!

There is a new weekly feature to our column that will be written by the CHS Student Body Public Relations Officer Lydia Lopez. The Student Council Report is an informational report of events happening on our campus from the student perspective.Enjoy, our students are amazing individuals and are doing some fantastic things.STUDENT COUNCIL REPORTCarson High has an exciting week coming up!Leadership hosted its annual Middle School Conference on Saturday in order to achieve its Silver Star Award. The goal of this conference was to allow the local middle school students to get a sense of what leadership is all about while getting to see workshops and getting to know new people. All October, CHS has been hosting cancer awareness weeks and have been asking students to wear a certain color on Wednesdays to show their support. Leadership is also having another cancer awareness week dress up on Wednesday, and we are asking students and staff to dress up in gray or black to show support for brain cancer.Also, this upcoming week is a rivalry week. Douglas games are left and right and most of them are the last home games for some seasons. The undefeated girl s varsity soccer team is hosting their Senior night on Monday at half-time of the game against Douglas rivals the game starts at 7 p.m..Boys soccer is also taking on Douglas on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. with senior night celebration also at half-time. On Thursday night, there are two senior nights going on. The girls varsity volleyball team faces off with Douglas at 6 p.m. with the senior recognition before the game, and right after the long-awaited football game against Douglas is also this week on Thursday.The game is at 7 p.m., and it is also the last official home game of the regular season. Senior night celebrations for football, cheer and band will be at half-time.Carson is definitely gearing up for a week filled with school spirit and fun with a three-day weekend on hand!HSPE TESTINGProficiency testing will take place the week of Oct. 29 at CHS. Students are encouraged to get good sleep and have a good breakfast to help improve their performance on the tests.MONEY RAISEDFOR CANCERThe CHS Girls Volleyball program hosted a Pinkies and Parents night on Oct. 11. All proceeds from the match were donated to The Pink Totties, a local charitable organization.The team would like to thank everyone for coming and showing their support for us and a great cause! The team raised $678.FBLA FUNDRAISERFuture Business Leaders of America (FBLA) will begin selling one-pound bags of coffee this week. The coffee is available in whole bean or ground roast and sells for $10 a bag.The coffee fundraiser was a huge hit last year, and members are excited about selling again. The bags of coffee would also make great stocking stuffers for those of you already shopping for the Christmas holiday. Orders will take place through Nov. 1 and will be ready for delivery after that date. To buy some coffee and support this club, call adviser Angila Golik 283-1737.BOWLING CLUB FUNDRAISERThere will be a fundraiser for the Bowling Club held at Carson Lanes Johnny Rockets and Wally’s Pizza on Oct. 23. Visit any of these establishments with a flier and a percentage of proceeds raised that day will be donated back to the Bowling Team. To get a flier, talk to any CHS bowling member or email Erin Been at ebeen@carson.k12.nv.us.SCIENCE CELEBRATES MOLE DAYScience students in Mrs. Emond, Mr. Dilley, and Mr. Bean’s classes will celebrate Mole Day at 6:02 a.m. Oct. 23 in room 205 with refreshments and a grade for participating.This is a global celebration among scientists and it represents the official quantity of any substance. For example: one mole of eggs would contain 6.022 x 10 to the 23rd power EGGS — hence, meeting at 6:02 a.m. on Oct. 23. This is an opportunity for Carson High students to be a part of a worldwide celebration only acknowledged by the science world.Along with receiving a grade for showing up, they also will have refreshments, and for another grade, they can develop their version of “the mole.” We then introduce Mole Corner that will display their creations for the school year.SENIOR GOVERNMENT STUDENTS TO VOTEAll seniors at CHS will participate in a mock election Tuesday and Wednesday. They will vote on the presidential, U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative, local supervisors, and school trustee candidates races.The students will also vote on issue CC#1. Some students will be old enough to vote for the first time in the general election, however, many of the students have still not met the constitutional requirement of 18 years of age.Government teachers at CHS feel it is still important for them to voice their opinion in a mock election, to get a sense of what it means to vote. The students will be able to monitor voting on election night and compare it to the results of their own mock election, thus determining if there election was a reflection of the actual outcome of the national election. For information or results of the mock election, contact Angila Golik at agolik@carson.k12.nv.us.SENIOR SPOTLIGHTCHS is proud to spotlight senior Kenzie Tillitt. She carries a weighted grade-point average of 4.52.At Carson High School, Kenzie is currently the captain of the girls varsity soccer team and a member of National Honor Society. Outside of CHS, She is a member of the Las Vegas Premier 95 Soccer Club, which is an Elite Club National League.It is a top league in the nation consisting of the top soccer clubs which are hand selected by US Youth Soccer. She also trains with the Nevada Elite Soccer Club in Reno, and has been a coach for three seasons for the Nevada Elite Soccer Club where she coaches 8-13 year old girls.Kenzie’s senior project will be volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, building a house in Stead. She also plays guitar and sings at open mic night at Comma Coffee, and will be holding a benefit concert to raise money for Habitat for Humanity — stay tuned for more information on that.Somehow, Kenzie also finds time to do the things outdoors that she enjoys — snowboarding, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking. Kenzie will be attending UC Boulder, where she has been awarded a soccer scholarship. She plans to major in environmental architecture.She’d love to play professional soccer or be a world renowned modern architect and design houses for billionaires. CHS will miss you, but we will cheer you on. Go Buffs!MEET CHS STAFFCan you guess who this staff person is? She is the first person you see when you walk in the front entrance of the high school. She is at almost every single sporting event at Carson High. She spends endless hours organizing sports rosters, transportation, team meetings, game security and team schedules.Kathy Taylor, the athletic secretary, is one of the faces of Carson High School. Kathy has been an employee of Carson City School District since 1995 where she worked for four years at Fritsch Elementary, but she came to CHS in 1999. All of her children, Ashley, Jason, Jaron and Kailey, all graduated from CHS.She said the best thing about her job is working with the kids, parents and staff and that she gets to help plan events that the entire community can experience and enjoy.An interesting fact about Kathy is that she was senior class president at Austin High in Austin, Nevada where she successfully led her entire class of seven seniors.When Kathy isn’t busy at Carson High sporting events, she enjoys spending time with her family camping and hanging out in Arizona.
