Carson v-ball remains in playoff hunt

Carson High remained in the hunt for a post season berth by knocking off Wooster in five games Tuesday night at Morse Burley Gym.

Wooster won the first game 25-12 and the third game 25-14. Carson took the second game 25-22, the fourth game 25-17 and the fifth game 16-14.

The win upped Carson's record to 6-9 heading into Thursday's season finale at home against arch-rival Douglas. The loss dropped Wooster to 6-9, and the defeat means Carson had a sweep in the head-to-head match-ups. Douglas is currently 6-9 after knocking off Damonte Ranch.

"Wooster fought really hard," Carson coach Robert Maw said. "It was a tough match. The girls stepped up especially in that last game."

Wooster had a 13-9 lead in the fifth set, and Carson fought back to tie the game at 14. The Senators went ahead 15-14, and then Wooster made an unforced error on match/game point.

Wooster blitzed Carson in the opener, rolling to a 12-2 lead, as Kim Lawrence served up two aces in that span while Maggie Mayer and Megan Biggs added one each. Narae Wadsworth and Biggs also had kills. Carson had two hitting errors and two ball-handling mistakes.

Carson closed to 16-7 and 18-10, but Wooster had a nice five-point run late in the game to take control at 23-10.

In Game 2, the teams were tied at 10, and then Carson scored 11 of the next 16 points for a 21-15 lead. Juliana Anderson, Savannah Smith and Gaby Palazzolo all had kills in that span. Smith enjoyed her best match of the year with 13 digs and 14 kills.

Wooster dominated Game 3, but Carson came back with a big Game 4 win, setting the stage for the thrilling finale.

"I thought we might have some hiccups," Maw said. "Brooklyn (Maw) came back, and we had just one day of practice together. Savannah had a great night hitting the ball and her passing settled down."

Maw finished with a 19 digs, while Anderson added 12 to go with seven kills. Kammy Forrest had eight kills and 5.5 blocks, Courtney Hack had nine digs, 28 assists, two blocks and a kill. Kenzie Price finished with 13 digs, nine assists, four kills and three blocks.

Douglas stops Mustangs

MINDEN - Shawnee McFadden finished with 12 kills and nine digs to lead Douglas to a 25-12, 16-25, 25-13 and 25-20 win over Damonte Ranch.

Katie McCullough had 11 kills, while Jenna Broussard had three kills, a block and five digs. Sage Pintler contributed nine digs and three aces. Shelby Van Winkle had 20 assists and 10 digs.

Dayton blanks Fernley

DAYTON - Jesse Garcia and Ryan Greenwalt scored a goal apiece to lead Dayton past Fernley, 2-0, and into the Division IA post-season tournament.

The Dust Devils grabbed the last playoff spot, and will travel to face top-seeded Sparks at 3 p.m.

"We dominated most of the game," Dayton coach Karl Watts said. "They had a few easy shots that Edgar (Diaz) grabbed. Julio Navarette played very well."

Carson golfers honored

Carson High golfer Heather Evans was named to the all-Sierra first time and was a second-team regional pick based on her season-long performance.

Callen Aten and Erica Gallegos were named to the Sierra League second team.
