PREPS: Dayton upsets Fernley in season finale

FERNLEY — Taryn Aguilera scored on an 8-yard run with less than a minute left to snap a 28-all tie and give the Dayton Dust Devils a season-ending 34-28 win over Fernley on Thursday night.The Dust Devils end the season with a two-game win streak and a 3-6 overall record.“It was really important to get this game,” Dayton coach Rob Turner said. “Last year we played Fernley with the playoffs on the line without our two sophomores (Aguilera and Austin Fletcher). They rose to the occasion tonight.”Dayton led 20-0 at the half, but Fernley outscored Dayton 21-8 in the third quarter to make it 28-21. Fernley tied the game with 9 minutes left, but missed the PAT. Dayton took the ensuing kick-off and held the ball for eight minutes before Aguilera scored the game winner.Aguilera ran for 140 yards and two scores, while Fletcher has 107 yards and two scores. Peyton Morena scored a TD and Quinn Santana rushed for 51 yards.Regional cross-country set for todayRENO — The cross country postseason kicks off today with the Northern Regional meet at Rancho San Rafael Park.The Division III-IV boys run at 10 a.m. followed by the IA boys at 10:40 a.m. and the Division I boys at 11:15. The Division III-IV girls start at 12:30 p.m. followed by the IA girl at 1 p.m. and the D-I girls at 1:50.In Division III-IV, the top four teams and the top five individuals not on advancing teams qualify for the state meet in Las Vegas. In the other two divisions, it’s the top three teams and the top five individuals not on advancing teams that will move on.The Carson High girls are the defending regional champs, edging both Galena and Douglas last year.Alex Drozdoff, who was second a year ago to Douglas’ Lindsey Adams, has been bothered by a sore toe in recent weeks. Cindy Juchtzer was seventh a year ago, and the Senators will need her to better that finish if they are to repeat. Shelby Brown was 26th a year ago.What makes Carson an outside favorite to qualify are freshmen Athena Favero and Evelyn Delgado. Both have turned in outstanding times in recent meets, according to coach Pete Sinnott.The Carson boys, led by Nick Greene, have some tough competition with McQueen, Galena and Reno.Greene was 16th last year, and he’s been Carson’s top finisher in most of the meets. Carson also will be looking for strong finishes from Anthony Cacioppo, Chris Merriner. Daniel Jauregui and Porfirio Jauregui.Dayton’s boys team has been solid all year, and will be fighting for the third qualifying spot against the likes of South Tahoe, Fallon and Spring Creek.Individually, Aaron Elissa, Joe Law and Skyler Rose all have an excellent opportunities to advance to state at Boulder City. Law and Elissa were 11th and 12th, respectively a year ago. Rose was 25th.“Aaron should qualify,” Dayton coach Shawn Anderson said. “He’s been 1 or 2 all year. Joe and Skyler are going to be competing 12 to 15 guys for those five spots. They are going to have to run their behinds off.”On the girls side, Katrina Breithaupt was fourth a year ago, and two of the three runners who beat her last year are back — Shelbie Dorsa and Skyler Flora.“Unless something happens, Katrina will qualify,” Anderson said. “I’d like to see her beat one of the two girls.”FOOTBALLCarson JVs lose finale to TigersCarson’s six-game winning streak was halted Wednesday night by arch-rival Douglas, 48-23. Carson finished 6-2.Corey Reid had one receiving TD, a 28-yard field goal and a 2-point conversion. He also had six tackles on defense.Gage Bobbitt had a 60-yard kick-off return for a score, while Anthony Estrada added a rushing touchdown.Quarterback Nolan Shine rushed for 113 yards, passed for 69 and had six tackles on defense plus an interception. Mike Wemheuer rushed for 71 yards and Brandon Maffei had 19 receiving yards.Kylar Perez and Josue Orozco had eight and five tackles, respectively.VOLLEYBALLDayton falls to FallonDayton heads into the 1-A playoffs fifth after losing to Fallon Thursday night. Fallon swept the Dust Devils 13-25, 20-25, 15-25.Dayton played without Madison Foley who is out with an injury.Leading Dayton was Alyse Fletcher with 11 digs, three assists and two digs. Peach Coons added 16 digs and eight assists and Ashley Vickers added eight digs and seven kills. Lovelock tops YeringtonLovelock topped Yerington in four games Thursday night. Lovelock won 26-24, 17-25, 25-12 and 25-22. Leading Yerington was Arcelia Arellano with 11 assists, eight digs and two aces. Bailee Banta added 10 digs. Chloe Dane had nine kills, eight digs, two blocks and three assists, Kassidy Lommori had 12 kills, 16 digs, three blocks and an ace. Savena Rogers had 17 assists, 12 digs and a kill. And Angela Sciarani had 16 digs, five kills and an ace.Yerington fell to 6-4 in league and 23-9 overall.
