Library News and Notes: Debut of digital media lab

Thanks to grants and matching donations totaling over $500,000, the computer center/digital media lab is close to opening. Accessible to adults and teens 14 and older, the center contains 26 adult-use computers, six teen-use, touch-screen PCs and two Apples, six high-end computers loaded with Auto Desk/ AutoCad, and Adobe Master Collection, and a digital media “craft zone,” which enables users to create podcasts and film against a green-screen backdrop. Two conversion stations allow patrons to convert noncopyright audio to digital format, VHS to digital DVD, and scanning capability for negatives and slides. Also, large-format printers and a first-in-the-nation iPad dispenser will be available soon. Everything in the center can be moved to a new, larger library space if CC-1 passes and a new library is constructed.Safe Trick-or-Treating at the Library, Spooky TourA special, safe Trick-or-Treating event is scheduled all day Wednesday in the library. Children are encouraged to dress in Halloween attire and visit each service desk for treats. Young patrons will enjoy the clever costumes, learn about the library and enjoy Story Time at 10:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. A spooky tour of the computer center is also available. To participate, sign up at the front desk. Tours will run every 15-30 minutes and will give folks a preview of the exciting library innovations.Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Nevada Neighbors XLAssistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at UNR, Brett Van Hoesen, PhD, will present a program entitled “Why German Art Matters.” Her discussion begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in the library auditorium.BRIC Business ClassesHighway 101: “The RoadMap to Business Success” classes are available at the BRIC. The free series includes Starting a Business, Marketing, Finance and Social Media and is held from noon until 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at the BRIC (108 E Proctor St).
