Multiple 911 calls came in - shots had been fired around the 1800 block of Long Street on Saturday night, around 11:15.
When the deputies arrived on scene, they "made contact with a known gang member," Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
The alleged gang member was also the victim and was on Long Street with his child and girlfriend when a black Honda drove by, according to Furlong.
Furlong said whether those in the Honda shot at the man or merely threw rocks at him, his girlfriend and his child is not yet known
At 11:28 p.m., deputies had located the car on Brown Street with multiple people inside it, Furlong said.
The occupants fled into an apartment, he said.
Deputies attempted to contact the group inside the apartment but no one would either come to the door or acknowledge the law enforcement presence.
The SWAT team was called in to gain entry to the apartment, which they did in the early morning hours of Sundays.
Six occupants admitted to law enforcement that they were in the Honda and at the scene but said they were throwing rocks, not shooting guns, Furlong said.
"It was all gang-on-gang," Furlong said.
The victim was not wounded and no evidence was found at the scene of gunfire, although there were multiple calls to 911 of shots fired.
The case is being sent to the district attorney, he said.
