Library News and Notes: Books & Writers: Cindie Geddes

As part of their Books and Writers series, Capital City Arts Initiative presents freelance author, editor, publisher and free-spirit Cindie Geddes. Geddes lives in Reno, studied wildlife biology at UNR and, as co-owner of Lucky Bat Books has been quoted as saying, “I like to make words work.” She also has run Flying Hand Writing Services for 14 years, sold around 300 articles, 14 short stories, and 11 ghostwritten books, using the pseudonym CC Geddes. According to her website, cindiegeddes.com, “CC is my dark side. The tales told under that name are dark, filled with fear, psychosis, and no small amount of violence.” Geddes will present a writer’s workshop beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, and at 7 p.m. the same evening, she will conduct a reading of her works. Because of Cindie’s extensive experience with editing and publishing, aspiring authors will thoroughly enjoy and benefit from her program.Harvest Book Sale The Friends of the Library are on a roll. The Friends’ previous book sale, consisting of bargain books at give-away prices, almost sold out. This is very good news for the Friends, the library and the shoppers at their book sale. Generous donations by the citizens of Carson City have packed the auditorium with a wide variety of new items for sale. Members of the Friends can preview and purchase books from 5:30 until 7 p.m. Thursday. The Harvest Book Sale will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. For those unable to attend the book sale, stop by the Browser’s Corner, immediately beyond the library entrance. A few days ago, John Grisham’s best-seller, Calico Joe, sat prominently on the shelf. Many patrons buy books at the Browser’s Corner, read them and then donate them again. The book circulates and the library benefits.Business Educationis Back at the BRICOpportunity knocks with education. BRIC manager and business librarian Michael Salogga and his staff are returning the popular, free lunchtime series, Hwy 101: “The RoadMap to Business Success.” Classes are from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, and there are two classes this month. On Sept. 19, Starting a Business 101 focuses on what it takes to start a business, business strategy and the importance of a solid marketing plan. On Sept. 26, Marketing 101 centers on competition, target marketing and branding. It has been said that the library card is the smartest, most valuable card found in a wallet: it enables the user to access an incredible amount of information and material, all for free. The only interest demanded is by the owner. The Carson City Library closes out National Library Card Sign-Up Month with “Concert on the Grass” from 6:30-9 p.m. on Sept. 28 on the lawn. People should bring chairs, blankets and possibly a picnic to enjoy while listening to the scheduled performance by the band Deep Groove. All are welcome, and this is a perfect opportunity to register for a card. Ongoing EventsThe Bookmasters/Toastmasters Book Club will finish a discussion of local mystery writer Todd Borg’s first novel, Tahoe Deathfall, at 6 p.m. Sept. 25.Vamos a Platicar (Let’s Talk) encourages participants to practice conversation in English and Spanish. This informal monthly program meets from 6-7 p.m. Sept. 26.Nevada Legal Services advocates for seniors, families, unemployed workers and children. At 1 p.m. Sept. 27, the group will provide a self-help forms completion clinic. At 3 p.m. on the same day, the topic will be the sealing of records.The Library Board convenes at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Sierra Room at the Community Center.Bi-Lingual Story Time enables children and their parents to hear stories in both English and Spanish. Crafts are included and refreshments are provided. The program begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 28.
