Carson boys lose heartbreaker, 1-0

You can sense the frustration within the Carson High boys soccer team, and with good reason.

The Senators were held without a goal for the third time this season, and despite dominating the game, dropped a 1-0 decision to North Valleys Wednesday night at Carson High.

Carson fell to 2-3-2. The Senators have been in a slump since opening the season with a win over Reno.

It was the second straight shutout loss for the Senators, who dropped a 2-0 decision to Wooster on Saturday. Earlier this year, Carson and McQueen played to a scoreless tie.

"It's frustrating," said defender Zach Smith. "We play a good game, but we can't seem to find the back of the net. No matter what we do, we can't score."

Carson had 10 shots on goal in the second half alone, but couldn't score. North Valleys had one shot on goal in the second half, and it resulted in the game's only score. Jorge Reyes scored in approximately the 58th minute.

"We got kind of flat on defense," Smith said. "Our goalie came out, and he chipped it over him."

Carson still had plenty of opportunities, enough that Mehdi Samii probably wanted to pull his hair out with each miss.

In the 61st minute, Jon Guevara and Cristian Hernandez tried to work a give and go which failed. Six minutes later, Miguel Ortiz shot it high and wide. In the 74th minute, Hernandez was wide, and two minutes later Nathan King tried to head in a corner kick and was unsuccessful. A minute later, Hernandez blasted a free kick toward the goal. The ball was deflected out to Carlos Alvarado, who missed wide left from about 5 yards out,

"Our effort is there," Carson coach Mehdi Samii said. "We had fantastic effort. The whole second half we dominated the game and kept them on their side of the field ecept that one time. I don't know what it. We can't buy a goal.

"I don't know why ot takes so long for the kids to settle down. Once the first half ends they settle the ball. It's like it's two different teams out there."

In the opening 40 minutes, Carson held a 4-2 advantage in shots. King and Milton Rodriguez had good looks at the goal on headers, but neither found the mark.

North Valleys' best opportunity to score came around the 35th minute. Smith tried to clear the corner kick out but the ball bounced off an NV player, and Jose Gonzalez hgad to come out and make the save.

"We weren't organized," Samii said. "We were playing kickball. We weren't playing to our feet. We did a much better job in the second half."
