Carson City’s spring cleanup program is keyed to mid-April, but the Carson City Fire Department already has an open-burning period through April 14.
The open burning allowed by the department began March 16 and runs through the day before the spring cleanup starts. To participate in open burning, Carson City residents must obtain a burn permit from one of the city’s three fire stations. For more information, call the Fire Prevention Division at 775-887-2210, ext. 2.
For the 10th consecutive year, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? is offering up to three bookings of junk removal per day for elderly or disabled Carson City residents at no cost during the cleanup period, which runs April 15-18. The program fills up quickly and has limited availability, so not everyone can be accommodated at no charge. Call 775-887-8898.
The Carson City Landfill is set for use as well, with the city sending out free disposal vouchers in March utility bills. Such vouchers are good for one free dumping per household. Maximum loads allowed will include one pickup bed and a small trailer of 4 by 8 feet. For other information and restrictions, call 775-882-6066 or 775-887-2355.
Pick-n-Pull Auto and Truck Dismantlers will tow away old cars or trucks and dispose of them in environmentally acceptable fashion at no charge during the cleanup. Call 775-841-1333 for more information and to schedule the tow-away and disposal service.
Recycling of cans, glass, newspapers, cardboard and plastic will be handled if residents take them to the Carson City Landfill Recycling Center. Any reusable items can go to places such as the Carson City Senior Center Thrift Store, FISH, OARC, Classy Seconds or the Salvation Army, according to the city.
Household hazardous waste such as pesticides, herbicides, paints and old gasoline can be disposed of via appointments; call 775-887-2355, ext. 7380 or ext. 7390. This program is for such waste at residences only, not for commercial materials.
