140 YEARS AGO

A strange bird at large. A cockatoo belonging to Jim Orndorff yesterday traveled off and has not since been seen. It cannot fly, but is a good pedestrian. Jim says it is likely to walk off a distance of file miles as it may also stop anywhere in town. What’s a cockatoo among so many of us?

130 YEARS AGO

Arthur McEwen has been a few months in California journalism and recently elected trustee of the Young Men’s Christian Association. He has been called a “crab-headed old trilobite and bullet-pated entomostracan phyollocardia” by the San Jose Mercury. We knew Mac would do credit to his sagebrush admirers in Nevada.

100 YEARS AGO

The black farming settlement on the N.-C.-O. 18 miles north of Reno, promises to be considerably increased according to the Pacific Colonization company which is promoting the colonization of the lands. Rev. Wilson and O. Hudson, both negroes believe the settlement will include fully 200 families — Journal.

70 YEARS AGO

Ray “Swede” Nelson, in a conversation by telephone with his mother, Mrs. Elvin Nelson, stated he has been promoted to the rank of staff sergeant. Ray is stationed at McClellan Field.

50 YEARS AGO

The Senate judiciary committee indicated Monday that it will back two bills designed to stop the baby-selling racket in Nevada.

20 YEARS AGO

Carson High’s Corey Sigafoos pitched a no-hitter as Carson High belted Lowry 18-0 in a non-league game at Winnemucca.
