Prep / JC Roundup WNC sweeps Colorado Northwestern, moves into 2nd in Scenic West

RANGELY, Colo. — Western Nevada College’s baseball team moved into second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference with a doubleheader sweep of last-place Colorado Northwestern on Friday afternoon.

WNC won the opener 13-3 and the nightcap 9-3.

The sweep extended WNC’s win-streak to six and put the Wildcats at 15-11 in league play and 30-16 overall. College of Southern Nevada has a seven-game lead on WNC. The Coyotes have 14 games left and WNC has 10 left. The teams have a four-game series coming up in Henderson.

The Wildcats scored five in the third and added eight in the seventh before the Spartans scored three in the seventh and broke up WNC’s no-hitter in the process.

Cody Hamlin worked the first three innings, all hitless, and Tyler Bennett followed with 2 2/3 innings. Brock Pellow came on in the bottom of the sixth and finished up.

A.J. Hernandez hit a grandslam in the eight-run seventh.

In the nightcap, WNC coach D.J. Whittemore used four pitchers. Luke Eubank worked the first three to get the win. Evan Parker gave up three runs in his two-inning stint, Conor Harber struck out eight in three innings and Spencer Greer worked the ninth.

Harber had two hits and three RBIs, while Colby Rice added two hits.

JC SOFTBALL

WNC GARNERS SPLIT

RANGELY, Colo. — Western Nevada splits its Scenic West doubleheader with Colorado Northwestern on Friday afternoon.

WNC won the opener 6-3 and dropped the second game 6-4.

In the opener, the Wildcats scored two in the sixth to wipe out a 2-1 deficit, and then added three in the seventh for insurance.

In the sixth, Andrea Lee slammed a two-run homer to put WNC ahead. In the seventh, the big blow was a two-run homer by Sydney Darby. Ali Lostra allowed one run in the seventh to secure the win.

Darby, Lee and Jenny Rechel all had two hits in the opener. Lostra allowed six hits and struck out three.

In the second game, Colorado Northwestern scored five first-inning runs against Lexi Alley, who managed to get two outs before departing in favor of Carlee Beck, who allowed a run and three hits in relief.

PREP SOFTBALL

DOUGLAS GOES 1-2

SPARKS — The Douglas softball team went 1-2 on the opening day of the Reed Easter Tournament in Sparks.

The Tigers, who dropped to 12-6 overall on the year, will play Reno at 8 a.m. today.

Douglas opened with a 4-2 loss to Newark Memorial, lost to Reed 3-2 and beat Carson 3-0.

In the opener, Kelly Sonnemann went 2-for-4, Makayla Shaver, Maddie Parks and Katie Kluever each went 1-for-3 and Kaitlin Bowman tripled and drove in a run. Bowman took the loss in the circle, striking out two and walking none. Kali Sargent struck out three and walked one in relief.

Douglas dropped a narrow decision to Reed for the second time this season, getting doubles from Illiana Brown and Allison Meyer. Both players went 2-for-3 while Brown and Shaver each drove in a run. Sargent took the loss, striking out two and walking none. Bowman turned in the same line in three innings of relief.

FALLON SWEEPS DAYTON

FALLON — The Fallon softball team blew past Dayton in a doubleheader on Thursday at the Ed Arciniega Complex.

The Lady Wave came out on top, 11-0 and 18-0, and have now won eight straight games. Fallon will compete today and Saturday in the Reed tournament.

The Lady Wave bested Dust Devils’ fireballer Makayla Shadle in game one. Shadle recorded 11 strikeouts, but allowed 11 runs — 10 unearned — in the loss. She held Fallon to three hits. Shadle also tallied a pair of singles,

Dayton’s defense struggled as the Dust Devils committed 11 errors.

Miranda Ford, meanwhile, allowed two hits and struck out three for Fallon.

Fallon took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Lady Wave tallied four runs and added three more in the sixth.

Kaysee Archer, who signed a letter of intent to play at Western Nevada College next season, went 3-for-4 with a double and scored four runs.

In the second game, Fallon roared out to an early 6-0 lead after the second inning. The Lady Wave tallied seven runs in the third and five in the fourth.

Dayton’s defense again struggled as the unit committed eight errors. Fallon banged out 11 hits.

Ali Tedford and Thorn led Fallon with three RBIs, while Ricken and Megan McCormick each drove in two. Tedford, Archer and Gabby Sharpe each tallied two hits.

Ricken, meanwhile, picked up the win and struck out four and did not allow a walk.
