WNC softball records sweep of Colorado Northwestern

RANGELY, Colo. — Western Nevada College’s softball team swept Colorado Northwestern in a Scenic West doubleheader on Saturday, 7-4 and 6-3, to improve to 11-25 in league play and 14-35 overall.

In the opener, WNC was down 2-0 in the first, but scored fourth in the third and three in the fourth to take control.

In the third, Heather Septon hit a two-run double and Sydney Darby hit a two-run single. In the fourth, WNC used three errors and a two-run double by Jenny Quam to score its runs. Andrea Lee, Darby, Alisha Nielsen and Quam all had two hits.

Carlee Beck picked up the win, allowing four runs, two earned, and six hits.

In the second game, Sydney Darby went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and single, and Ali Lostra scattered six hits to lead the Wildcats.

WNC never trailed. The Wildcats led 6-0 until the seventh when the Spartans scored three times to make things interesting. Beck got the final out of the game.

Septon and Nielsen led the offense with three hits apiece, while Darby and Lee added two each.

WNC SWEEPS AGAIN

RANGELY, Colo, — Western Nevada College cruised to doubleheader sweep of Colorado Northwestern, 9-0 and 15-3, Saturday afternoon.

WNC improved to 17-11, and by virtue of Salt Lake’s sweep against first-place College of Southern Nevada, the Wildcats trail CSN by just three games heading into the final three weeks of the season.

In the opener, Christian Stolo, Austin Richmond and Spencer Greer combined on a 3-hit shutout. Stolo worked three hitless innings to pick up the win. Conner Klein hit a three-run homer and Conor Harber hit two triples and drove in four runs.

In the second game, A.J. Hernandez’s three-run homer enabled WNC to break open a 2-1 game in the fourth. Tony Roque hit his first homer of the season and Alex Fife also went yard.

Phil Belding worked the first four innings to pick up the victory.

CARSON GOES 0-2 at REED

SPARKS — Carson High’s softball team lost 7-6 to Fallon in extra innings and then lost to Douglas for the second straight day, 6-5, to conclude play in the Reed Easter tournament on Saturday at the Shadow Mountain Complex.

In the loss to Fallon, the Greenwave scored two in the bottom of the seventh to grab a thrilling win.

Jen Purcell took the loss and gave up just three hits, but walked eight batters and was the victim of a leaky defense which made eight errors. None of the runs were earned.

Purcell had put her team ahead 6-5 in the top of the seventh, but two errors in the bottom of the seventh enabled Fallon to score twice.

Purcell led the offense with three hits, while Aubrey Northrup added two, Ellise McGowan also drove in a run.

In the loss to Douglas, Carson had a 5-3 lead entering the sixth only to watch Douglas score three times in the bottom of the inning to win it.

An error and a two-run single by Katie Chieffo enabled the Tigers to post the come-from-behind victory.

Purcell gave Carson a quick 2-0 lead with a two-run homer to center. Douglas scored one in the first and two in the fourth for a 3-2 lead. Bailey Allen’s two-run gave the Senators what turned out to be a short-lived lead. Allen led Carson with two hits. Allison Meyer and Chieffo led DHS with two hits.

“The girls played better than they did yesterday,” Carson coach Shelby Tuttle said. “We played tighter defense against Douglas. I thought the pitching was solid. Neither loss was because of pitching.”

• In a 2-1 loss to Reno, Douglas sophomore Kali Sargent was the hard-luck losing pitcher, striking out five, walking two and scattering five hits that led to two runs. Katie Kluever scored Douglas’ lone run, Taylor McKinnon went 2-for-3 and Makayla Shaver hit a triple as the Tiger offense was largely kept silent at the hands of Reno pitcher Morgan Eisele (6 strikeouts, 4 hits).

HAVE SUCCESS

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Carson High’s frosh-soph team won the Glenn Pole Invitational on Saturday. The varsity girls were third and the boys were ninth.

The frosh-soph boys finished with 100 points, 27 better than Whitney of Rocklin. Whitney and Douglas tied for the girls title with 76.33 and Carson was next with 58.

Carson dropped Corey Reid down to frosh-soph, and he won the 200 (23.60), the high jump (6-6) and the pole vault (9-8). Asa Carter won the long jump (18-7 1/4), the triple jump (40-10 3/4) and was fourth in the 300 hurdles (44.62). Chris Miranda won the shot put (45-3) and took third in the discus (104-1). Ian Schulz won the discus (117-0) and was fourth in the shot (40-3).

Elena Thurman continued to excel with a win in the triple jump (34-8), a fourth in the 200 (26.93), a seventh in the 100 (13.35) and teamed with Kayla Aikins, Athen Favero and Sahara Winder for third in the 1600 relay. Alex Drozdoff, back from the injury list, was third in the 1600 (5:43.01) and seventh in the 3200 (12:05.01). Madison Preston was second in the high jump (5-0), long jump (15-11 1/4) and triple jump 34-0). Favero was third in the 300 hurdles (50.08) while Teresa Boehmer was sixth in the discus at 96-1.

Dakota Baker led the varsity boys with fourth-place finishes in the 110 hurdles (16.29), the 300 hurdles (41.94) and the high jump (5-8).Aaron Cowee was fifth in the shot (44-4) and was eighth in the discus (116-6). Levi Carter was fifth in the discus (129-7). Zach Heinz was sixth in the 800 at 2:04.4 and Joey Thurman was seventh in the long jump at 19-7.

SWIMMING

TIGERS OUTSWIM CARSON

Douglas High’s swim team got the best of Carson in their league match-up on Saturday. The Douglas boys dunked Carson 166-117 and the Douglas girls won 194-92.

Shelby Koontz led the DHS girls with wins in the 100 fly (1:01.14) and the 200 free (2:00.77). Kyl Johnston won the 100 free (51.04) and the 200 IM (2:08.14).

Abigail Pittman and Vanessa Rauch led the Carson girls with two second-place finishes. Pittman was second in the 200 IM (2:27.50) and the 200 free (2:09.94). Rauch was second in the 100 free (1:01.93) and 100 back (1:09.67). Eli Everest was second in the 500 free (5:39.22) and third in the 200 free (2:10.0). The quartet of Rauch, Sophie Holmes, Pittman and Everest were second in the medley relay and third in the free relay.

On the boys side, Tallon Rauch led Carson with wins in the 50 free (24.88) and 100 back (59.84). Dagen Kipling was first in the 100 fly (59.99) and second in the 200 IM (2:13.33). Gary Showalter was first in the 100 breast (1:06.67) and second in the 100 free (54.43).Monte Howell had a third in the 500 free and a fourth in the 200 IM (2:38.62).

The quartet of Casey Garrett, Kipling, Showalter and Rauch won the 200 medley relay (1:51.44). In the 200 free relay, Carson was second with Howell, Gaige Bobbitt, Andrew Updegrove and Showalter clocking a 1:50.89. Carson was second in the 400 free relay (3:46.13) thanks to the efforts of Rauch, Drew Briggeman, Garrett and Kipling.

DAYTON SWEPT

FALLON — Dayton lost 17-6 and 8-4 to Fallon in a Lahontan League doubleheader on Saturday. No other information was provided by the Dayton coaching staff.

Dayton plays Fernley on April 24.
