Tough day for CHS, Tigers

RENO — Thanks to six errors, Carson High’s win streak ended at 5 with an 11-1 loss to McQueen Tuesday afternoon.

Carson dropped to 13-9 overall heading into Thursday’s return game against the Lancers at Ron McNutt Field at 3:45 p.m.

The loss went to Chase Blueberg, who dropped to 4-1 on the year. Blueberg went 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and seven runs, five earned. Brandon Allen also had a tough time, allowing four runs, only one earned in 1.1 innings. The six CHS errors resulted in five unearned runs.

“We did not play well,” Carson coach Bryan Manoukian said. “It was terrible. It was snowy, windy and we had a delay. Six errors in any game doesn’t get it done. We were terrible.”

Kody Reynolds picked up the win for the Lancers. He scattered five hits in the five-inning game. The only run he allowed was in the second when Jace Zampirro hit a lead-off triple and scored on a single by Cody Schmidlin.

Carson had one other threat in the fifth after one-out singles by Dom Norton and Gehrig Tucker. However, Reynolds retired Luke Maher on a fly to right and Zampirro on a comebacker.

Reynolds did some damage at the plate with two sacrifice flies and a run-scoring single. Nathan Angliolo, the No. 9 hitter, went 2-for-3 with three RBI, all coming in the fifth when he tripled with the bases loaded off Allen.

Norton had two hits, while Zampirro, Tucker and Schmidlin added one each.

TIGERS LOSE TO MINERS

MINDEN — The Douglas baseball team stumbled into the first game of the toughest stretch of its season Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-2 to Manogue.

Douglas stranded 10 baserunners, left the bases loaded three times and managed just four hits in the loss.

“Manogue is a good team, there is no doubt about it,” Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. “They are strong one through nine in their lineup. But we did some good thing against them.

“We pitched well enough and we played defense well enough to have a chance. We just couldn’t get it done at the plate.”

It was the Tigers’ third consecutive league loss as they dropped to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in Northern Division I action.

The game was the first of an eight games in 12 days stretch during which Douglas will see Manogue, Spanish Springs, Reno and Reed — some of the top programs in Northern Nevada — in order.

“We’re in the middle of it, we just have to regroup and get ready for Thursday,” Jacobsen said.”

Dalton Grisell started the game on the mound for the Tigers and pitched well, striking out two and walking two. Kyle Johnson closed out the game, striking out three and walking one of his own.

Manogue plated all six of its runs in the third and fourth innings, thanks in large part to a base-clearing, three-run double in the third.

On the other side, Douglas loaded the bases with two outs in the first but Manogue was able to make a nice play on a sharp grounder up the middle from Cale Kynett to end the threat.

Douglas again loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, this time with one out, and managed to score when Kaleb Foster was hit by a pitch. Another big Manogue defensive play, this time from center fielder Devonte German running down a line drive from Nolan Weintz in the right-center gap, ended the inning.

“Guys were making good contact at spots like that,” Jacobsen said. “We just couldn’t find that big hit today. We don’t need to get 10, 15 hits to win ballgames, but we do have to find ways to get the job done.”

Douglas scored its final run again on another bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, this one to Chase White, in the sixth inning.

Dillon Lopez collected two hits for Douglas while Joe Almeida and Jimmy King each had one.
