Woman gets prison in theft

A 36-year-old Carson City woman, who drained nearly $4,000 from the bank account of her brother while he was in the military, lost her probation Monday for too many violations in a deferred sentence.

District Judge Michael Gibbons ordered Kristi Lynn Reed to serve 12-48 months in Nevada state prison. He gave her credit for 130 days in custody.

She pleaded guilty in 2010 to felony theft.

“It‘s very sad to see after all that you’re still sitting here,” Gibbons said.

Reed was given a deferred sentence and ordered to successfully complete Western Regional Drug Court.

Gibbons referred to several pages of notes from drug court which included sanctions, and unsuccessful attempts at rehabilitation over the past two years.

Reed’s attorney, Jamie Henry, said her client sought to complete her sentence rather than be reinstated on probation.

“Hopefully, she will be a better person when she gets out,” Henry said.

“You sent me to drug court and indicated how serious my addiction is,” Reed said. “I worked really hard and learned a lot of lessons. I don’t consider the two years a waste.”

Reed said she would like to leave the area after she’s released and raise her son in Hawaii.

“I want to go on with my life sober,” she said.

Gibbons encouraged Reed to take advantage of prison treatment programs and education opportunities while she is incarcerated.

When she’s released, Reed is to report to court to set up a payment plan for the $2,835 she owes in restitution.

According to reports, Reed reportedly wrote 24 checks to herself and friends totaling more than $3,685 on her brother’s credit union account in July and August 2010.

The crime was discovered when her brother, reviewing his account online, noticed it was overdrawn by $594.34 and recognized his sister’s handwriting on the check facsimiles.
