Carson track teams finish third

Carson High’s boys and girls track teams each finished third at the 6th annual Carson Invitational Saturday at the Jim Frank Complex.

The McQueen boys finished with 146.5 followed by Douglas at 115.5 and Carson at 105. Galena was fourth with 82. Douglas won the girls’ title with 185 followed by Galena at 121 and Carson at 82.75. Reno was fourth at 71.25.

“I’m OK with it (the final scores),” Carson coach Robert Maw said. “We were missing a couple of girls (Athena Favero and Teresa Boehmer) who could have scored points. I was pleased with the 3200 relay team. They ran an 8:09, and I think we can get down to 8:01 or 8:02. Corey (Reid) ran well in the 400 (49.66, 2nd). We only had him take one jump in the high jump (5-10, tied for second) because he’s been battling blister issues. I think he can start faster (in the 400). The boys 1600 relay was strong. We’re probably third or fourth in the north.

“Elena (Thurman) and Madison (Preston) both PR’d in the triple jump. Asa (Carter) PR’d by 10 inches in the triple jump. Zach (Heinz) had a PR in the 800. He had a cold in the middle of the season which kicked his rear, but he’s been coming on).”

The Carson boys had wins in the triple jump, 3200 relay. 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the distance medley.

The 3200 team of Heinz, Taylor Bradshaw, Dexter Cummings and Corey Reid ran an 8:09.92, while the same quartet took third in the 1600 at 3:34.07. The distance medley team of Nick Greene, Austin Gardner, Michael Samii and Daniel Jauregui won in 11:38.62. Carson’s 800 relay team of Joey Thurman, Dakota Baker, Cummings and Anthony Estrada was fifth in 1:34.91, and the 400 relay team of Thurman, Estrada, Bradshaw and Cummings was third in 44.83.

Carter, a freshman, continues to impress. He finished with a mark of 43-7. Baker tied Reid in the high jump in 5-10 and won both the 110 and 300 hurdles in 15.92 and 41.18. Thurman was fourth in the 100 at 11.93. Nathan Hazard was fourth in thew discus at 132-7 and Levi Carter was eighth at 124-3. Anthony Cacioppo was seventh in the 3200 at 10:57.01, while Samii was eighth in the 1600 (4:57.17).

On the girls’ side, Thurman won the 100 (13.27) with a nice lean at the finish, won the triple jump with the aforementioned 36-4 1/4 mark and she was sixth in the high jump at 4-8. Preston won the long jump at 16-1 3/4, was second in the high jump at 5-feet and second in the triple jump at 36-1, her first time over 36 feet in the event. Alex Drozdoff was fifth in the 1600 at 5:38.32 and 12th in the 3200 (13:51.66). Alison Greene was sixth in the 4000 at 63.97. Evelne Delgado was eighth in the 1600 at 5:41.57 and Jessie Balkwell was eighth in the 800 at 2:39.24.

The quartet of Delgado, Cindy Juchtzer, Kayla Aikins and Drozdoff won the 3200 relay in 10:15.61, while Aikins, Greene, Balkwell and Shelby Brown took second in the distance medley in 13:51.85. The 800 relay squad was sixth in 1:55.12 and the 1600 team of Sahara Winder, Aikins, Delgado and Sahara Winder was seventh in 4:32.72. Winder was sixth in the 300 hurdles at 52.75.

The regional trials are May 4 at Damonte Ranch with the finals slated for May 11, also at Damonte Ranch.
