The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is hosting its fifth annual clothing drive to help families in Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville and Dayton communities get ready for school.

The event is open to the public from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel, 411 N. Saliman Road.

“This is our fifth annual clothing drive to help families obtain clothing and reduce the stress parents face in getting their children ready for the new school year,” said David Haws, president of the church’s local organization.

Event organizers are also asking for clothing donations from the community. Drop off new or clean and gently used clothing from 4-8 p.m. today at 411 N. Saliman Road.

Kelli Asp, President of the church’s local women’s organization, said she schedules the annual event in August to help families get ready for the new school year. “We invite the whole family to come out. We will have a selection of clothing ranging from infant to adult,” said Asp. She emphasized that all items are provided free of charge.

Providing service to others is central to the Mormon belief of following the example of Jesus Christ. This is a non-denominational event open to the public.
