140 years ago

Hoo Boys. The boys are getting their hands in a byway of preliminary exercise looking toward a more lucrative case of the lariat when the hog ordinance, postponed until next week, is enforced to the letter. They are lassoing everything, themselves not excepted. One of the liveliest uses of the lariat was in the attack of twelve or fifteen hogs in the plaza yesterday. After a while they were so bored and beat they went away with heads lowered.

Excitement in Eureka. There is considerable fat in the fire in Eureka over a rumpus in the Board of County Commissioners. The board is now being sued for six thousand dollars for the alleged improper expenditures of money.

100 years ago

A new propeller for boats is being tried out by inventor Mr. C. O. Demaurez. The inventor says his new propulsion system does away with the standard propeller and the force of power is given direct to the boat.

70 years ago

Capt. Clark Gable took part in the great Flying Fortress raid on Germany today. His plane received 15 flack holes while beating off five head-on attacks by folk-Wolfe fighters.

50 years ago

The dedication of a plaque commemorating the Pony Express riders will be this Saturday in front of the Nevada State Museum.

(Photo Caption) Among activities at this weekend’s annual Santa Maria Days in Dayton were the “Monkey Drill,” and the “Caber Toss.” The winning toss of the 12-foot, 150 pound log, or “Caber” was 32.9 feet.
