Storm warning calls for snow in Valley

A winter storm warning is in effect for early Tuesday morning for Western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm warning was issued at 2:47 p.m. and called for periods of light rain and snow, early Tuesday morning, quickly turning to heavy snow behind a cold front.

Snow will be most intense 7-10 a.m. with accumulations of 3-6 inches with 8 inches above 8,000 feet.

Snow levels will start at 6,000 feet early Tuesday morning and fall to the Valley floor at 6-8 a.m., according to the forecast.

Snow could create dangerous driving conditions for the Tuesday commute on highways 395, 50 and 88.

Forecasters suggest motorists slow down and allow extra time to arrive at their destination, and carry tire chains, food, water, blankets and a flashlight in the car in case of emergency.

A wind advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. today, with southwest to west winds 20-35 mph, gusting to 50-60 mph.

A 40 mph wind gust was clocked in Carson Valley at 12:30 p.m. today.

The front front is expected to bring much colder temperatures to the area by Wednesday, with high temperatures not rising above freezing until later in the week, and lows in single digits.
