Approximately 80 seniors from Carson High School toured the Western Nevada College campus on Friday.
A large group of Carson High School seniors received a taste of college life during a visit to Western Nevada College last week. Seventy-five CHS students spent the day attending information sessions led by faculty members and asking questions about college and WNC.
“College Day allows faculty to introduce their programs, and helps students have a better understanding about the academic paths at WNC,” said WNC counselor J.W. Lazzari. “Students want to see their options; visiting campus gets students excited.”
It is the first step in WNC’s Bridge to Success program, which brings access and awareness of postsecondary educational opportunities to high school students and their parents.
A second College Day is set for Friday, Dec. 6. As many as 300 high school seniors from Dayton, Douglas, Silver Stage, Yerington, Smith Valley, Pioneer, Sierra Lutheran and Virginia City are expected to attend.
In addition, WNC Fallon campus will host up to 150 seniors from Churchill County, Fernley and Mineral County high schools.
After applying to WNC, students will visit with a counselor and take a placement test. Then, they can apply for financial aid, register for classes and attend an orientation session.
“The college has made some exciting enhancements to the Bridge to Success program that allows faculty to play a greater role in outreach efforts,” Lazzari said.
During last week’s event, students learned about specific programs of interest, including nursing, American Sign Language, geology, anthropology, welding, electronics and education.
Lazzari said CHS seniors who were unable to attend the Nov. 22 College Day event can still participate in the Bridge to Success program to prepare them for enrollment. Contact the WNC Counseling Services office at 775-445-3267.
Mitten Trees to Warm Winter for Families
Looking for an opportunity to bring someone holiday cheer? The Associated Students of Western Nevada College is doing its part to bring warmth to needy families during the winter with a Mitten Tree clothing collection program.
WNC’s student government has set up undressed Christmas trees in the Bristlecone and Cedar Buildings on the Carson City campus so students and residents can donate new or gently used mittens, hats and scarves.
All sizes for children and adults can be donated through Dec. 17. Donated items will be given to the Salvation Army of Carson City to distribute to needy families.
Nurses Invite Angels to Help Others
There are children in Carson City who need angels this holiday season. The Western Nevada College nursing program invites participation in an Angel Tree gift-giving program so those children can find presents under the tree on Christmas morning.
The WNC nursing department will have an Angel Tree in the Cedar Building second floor, room 231. The Salvation Army of Carson City provides 60 tags with the Christmas wishes of needy children in the community.
The generous people who remove a tag from the tree must return the unwrapped gifts to the office of Nursing Professor Debra Ingraffia-Stong, Cedar Building Room 231, by Friday. For more information, call 775-445-3334.
