Prep Roundup: Sierra Lutheran cruises in tourney opener

RENO — Amy Westre scored 14 points and Cali Benton added 12 as Sierra Lutheran rolled over the Wooster freshmen girls basketball team (48-19) in the opening of the State Farm Holiday Classic freshmen bracket.

Westre added 10 rebounds, Katy Cobb had six steals and Sabrina Ronato had eight assists.

Sierra Lutheran improves to 3-4 heading into this morning’s game against McQueen at 9:30 a.m.

Castlemont (Calif) 58, Dayton 12

Dayton managed only two second-half points in an opening-round loss of the Under Armour Silver State Slam at McQueen High School. Dayton was down 15-7 after the first period, but ran out of steam.

No other information was available.

Dayton (0-3) plays Damonte Ranch at 3 p.m. today.


JV GIRLS

Carson 43, Reed 38

RENO — Carson overcame the post-Christmas sluggishness to score 13 points in the first quarter and 10 points in all the other quarters en route to a win over Reed in the opening of the State Farm Holiday Classic. Serena Miller scored 21 points to lead the team.

Carson, 9-0, plays at 1:30 p.m. today.


JV BOYS

Reed 53, Carson 48

Jayden DeJoseph (13), Kyle Krebs (10) and Tez Allen (10) all scored in double figures, but it wasn’t enough for Carson at the State Farm Holiday Classic. Carson, 7-2, plays Dayton at North Valleys today.


FROSH GIRLS

Carson 53, Reed 30

Carson used 19 steals to cruise past Reed in the in the first round of the State Farm Holiday Classic in Reno. Anya Woodbury led the team with 14 points, Josie Share chipped in 10 points and Molly Otto had 10 points and eights steals.

Carson, 9-0, plays North Valleys at 12:15 p.m. today in the tournament.


FROSH BOYS

Carson 42, Reed 41

Michael Mendoza’s 3-point play with one second left in overtime gave Carson a a 42-41 win over Reed in the first round of the State Farm Holiday Classic in Reno.

Taylor Saarem scored 17 points to lead the Senators.
