Prep Roundup: 5 wrestlers move on at Sierra Nevada Classic

RENO — The Carson High wrestling team sits in sixth place after the first day of the Sierra Nevada Classic on Friday. The Senators have five wrestlers still alive today in the prestigious 82-team tournament.

Anthony Estrada at 126 pounds, Kyle Sharp at 132 pounds and Brady Rivera at 182 pounds are all undefeated on the tournament. Nicholas Lani, 4-1, at 138 pounds is still alive in the consolation bracket. He is joined by heavyweight Aaron Cowee who went 3-1.

Clovis West (Calif.) leads the tournament with 127 points, followed by Del Oro I (Calif.) with 113, Folsom (Calif.) with 101, Servite (Calif.) with 98.5 points, Piedra Vista (New Mexico) with 98 and Carson with 86.5 points.

Coach Paul Carter was happy with his team’s performance. He set today’s goal to finish in the top 10 in the team competition.

“The highlight was Estrada, he is wrestling phenomenal,” the first-year head coach said.

Carter said Estrada was impressive in a first-round pin over No. 4-seeded Clay Shropshire, from Del Oro, in the third round of the championship bracket. Shropshire was a California state finalist last year, according to Carter.

Sharp was dominant registering pins in all three of his matches. He faces the No. 1 seed to open today’s action.

After receiving a first-round bye, Rivera won by decision and pin to advance to today.

After a pin in his first round, Lani lost to Spring Creek’s Sheldon Davis. Lani bounced back with three pins to stay alive.

Cowee went 3-1, according to Carter, winning his first two matches.

At 106 pounds, Casey Stevens went 1-2 on the day. Also at 106 pounds, Brandon Basa lost his first match by a decision before winning three matches in a row, all by pin. He was eliminated in the last round of the night.

At 113 pounds, Sammy Mercado went 2-2; at 120 pounds Spencer Rogers went 1-2; at 132 pounds Garrett McDermott went 0-2; and Alexander Honeycutt went 0-2 at 145 pounds.

At 152 pounds, Nolan Shine went 3-2 on the day losing in the last round of the day. At 160 pounds, Elijah Fajayan went 2-2, including eliminating teammate Victor Freeman, who went 1-2. At 195 pounds, Connor Siervers went 2-2 ; at 220 pounds Corey Jasper went 1-2; and also at 220 pounds, Sheldon Miller went 1-2.

Today’s action gets started at 9:30 a.m. at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

VARSITY GIRLS

Damonte Ranch 48, Dayton 21

The Dayton girls basketball team continues to gain experience against larger schools before diving into the league season.

The Dust Devils came up short, 48-21, against Damonte Ranch on Friday at the Silver State Slam at McQueen High School.

Cheyanne Strong led the team with eight points, a day after scoring six points in the team’s loss to Castlemont (Oakland, Calif.). Lettie Lynch chipped in seven points on Friday for the Dust Devils.

“We did a much, much better job today running what we strive to run. It was a real sign of progress,” said coach Ben Halverson. “Execution wasn’t always clean enough for success, but in a lot of ways we were very close ... we are encouraged by what we saw.”

Dayton, 0-5, plays Hug at 1 p.m. today at McQueen High School.

JV Boys

Carson 64, Dayton 22

Julian Alvarado (16) and Cody Azevedo (14) scored in double figures to lead Carson past Dayton in the State Farm Holiday Classic in Reno.

Kyle Krebs and Jayden DeJoseph each chipped in nine points for the 8-2 Senators. Carson plays Hug at 5:45 p.m. today at North Valleys.

JV Girls

Carson 52, North Valleys 38

Carson broke open a 5-point game with a 22-point explosion in the fourth quarter to defeated North Valleys at the State Farm Holiday Classic.

Serena Miller scored 20 points to lead Carson. Brianna Alvarado added 16 points for the 10-0 Senators.

Carson plays Reno at 1:30 p.m. today.

Dayton 0-2 at tournament

Dayton lost 42-14 to Reed on Friday and 34-15 against North Valleys on Thursday at the State Farm Holiday Classic.

FROSH BOYS

Carson 45, Excel Christian 38

Geraet Raun scored 14 points to lead Carson to a 45-38 win over Excel Christian at the State Farm Holiday Classic.

Taylor Saarem added 8 points.

FROSH Girls

Reed 57, Dayton 15

Jessie Ingham and Emma Silva each scored four points as Dayton came up short against Reed in the State Farm Holiday Classic in Reno.
