RENO (AP) — Washoe County health officials have reinstated a wood burning ban.
The burn code was changed Tuesday from yellow to red until further notice. That means the use of fireplaces, wood stoves or pellet stoves is prohibited unless it’s the only heat source.
Calm winds and a lack of weather systems have created a temperature inversion, where colder air remains on the valley floors, trapping pollutants.
Health officials say the air quality is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. People with heart or lung disease, older adults and children should avoid prolonged or heavy exertion when outdoors.
