PREP-JC: WNC fails to hit in clutch

The Western Nevada baseball team stranded 10 runners on base in losing to Central Arizona College 3-1 on Saturday in Coolidge, Ariz.

"It was another really good college baseball game," coach DJ Whittemore said of the meeting between top 10 teams. "They have outstanding pitching and our pitchers have been outstanding.

"We had our chances. We stranded six runners in the last three innings."

Conor Harber went 2-for-4 scoring WNC's only run. AJ Hernandez added two hits. Tyler Baker and Donald Glover Jr. each picked up a hit.

Phil Belding started for WNC tossing five innings of 3-hit ball. He allowed one earned run. Austin Richmond pitched three innings of 1-hit ball. He was the hard luck loser as Central Arizona pushed across two unearned runs in the seventh to take the lead.

"We look for another opportunity against the top team in the country (today)," Whittemore said.

McQueen High graduate Christian Stolo will get the ball in game 1 today.

"Team is playing hard and enjoying the sunshine," Whittemore said.

The teams play a doubleheader today starting at 11 a.m.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

WNC WINS TWICE

YUMA, Ariz. - Western Nevad improved to 3-10 with wins over El Paso and Golden West Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats won the first game 10-1 over El Paso and then nipped Golden West 3-1.

Carlee Beck won both games in the circle. She worked six innings and gave up six hits and three walks in the opener. In the second game, she allowed two hits over four innings in relief of Alisha Nielsen.

WNC collected 11 hits against El Paso, as Madison Gonzalez, Sydney Darby, Jenny Rechel and Alia Cox all had two hits. Darby drove in four runs and Gonzalez three. Nielsen, Heather Septon and Jenny Quam added a hit apiece.

WNC scored in five of its seven at-bats. The Wldcats had four in the fourth and three in the seventh.

In the second game, WNC scored all three of its runs in the fifth. Rechel and Gonzalez drove in a run apiece. Quam, Darby, Andrea Lee and Gonzalez all had two hits.

WNC opens Scenic West play with a series against No. 16 College of Southern Idaho in St. George Utah.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

LOVELOCK 61, DAYTON 30

DAYTON - Lovelock bolted to a 17-5 first-quarter lead and coasted to an easy victory on Saturday.

Dayton was held to seven first-half points, but recovered to score 23 in the final 16 minutes, including 15 in the third quarter.

"They came out hot," Dayton coach Cliff Serawop said. "They were on fire, and we couldn't match it."

Maribel Ledezma and Cheyenne Strong led Dayton with six points apiece, while Ashley Hill and Destinee Serawop added four each.

WRESTLING

ROUGH DAY FOR DAYTON

WINNEMUCCA - Dayton's wrestling season ended Saturday without a Dust Devil wrestler qualifying for next weekend's state meet in Reno.

The best Dayton finish was Joshua Millett's fifth-place finish at 170. At 220, David Gutierrez was sixth. The top four finishers advanced.
