WNC rallies from big deficit to beat Pima

In what coach DJ Whittemore called “the greatest comeback in program history,” the Western Nevada College baseball team erased an eight-run deficit en route to a 12-11 win over Pima College on Friday.WNC struggled early as defensive letdowns behind starter Brandon Show led to a 10-2 hole after five innings. WNC started to close the deficit with five runs in the fifth. After allowing another run, WNC scored five runs in the eighth inning to win.“As a coach, you preach to play every pitch; and (this game) was a good example of what can happen when you do that,” Whittemore said. AJ Hernandez had 5 RBIs pounding a 3-run home run in the fifth inning and the go-ahead 2-run homer in the eighth inning.Connor Klein hit a 3-run pinch hit homer to bring the Wildcats within one run of Pima.Christian Stolo picked up the win allowing one run in four innings. Luke Eubank picked up his third save on the season. WNC, 7-2, plays a doubleheader against Pima at noon today. The games are being played in Henderson. JV BOYS BASKETBALLDOUGLAS 52, CARSON 44The Senators finished the season 12-15 after a close loss to the Tigers.Ian Schulz led Carson with 16, while Jared Rooker added 12. Asa Carter was next with seven.Alex Tessmann led Douglas with 16.JV GIRLS BASKETBALLCARSON 49, DOUGLAS 39Alyssa Ridley bounced back from an early season knee injury to lead the Senators to a 49-39 win over rival Douglas in JV girls basketball action on Friday.Ridley led the Senators with 16 points. Ivy Pembrook added 15 points, Teresa Boehmer added eight points, Lindy Lehman and Christina Boling both added four points and Mykelti O'Brien added two points.“Everyone stepped up and we ended the season with a win,” coach Mike Peterson said. Carson won the game despite going 13-for-36 from the free throw line. The Senators finished the season 14-2 in conference and 17-6 overall.Mariah Burkhart led Douglas with 14 points, Jessie Jim and Keli Sargent added eight points apiece. FRESHMEN GIRLS BASKETBALLDouglas 53, Carson 44Free throws hurt the Carson freshmen girls basketball team in a tightly called loss to Douglas on Friday. The Senators ended the otherwise successful season by missing 31 free throws during the game. Carson had three starters foul out of the game.“Despite the free throws I'm super happy for them and for our amazing season,” said coach Nick Halen. “I cannot wait to see these girls play next year.”
