Senator Square: Carson High students to broadcast talents in annual show

Coincidental timing has occurred with the start of the 77th Nevada Legislature and the actions of my own classroom. My government students have recently started Mock Congress in which the students created bills, conducted committee hearings and are now debating bills in the committee of the whole.How a bill becomes a law is coming to life not only in the Nevada Legislature, but also in my classroom. Bills being considered by these future leaders include increase in minimum wage, tax benefits for businesses that produce stateside as opposed to overseas, school security systems, immigration reform, federal student aid fund, gun regulations, and a penny elimination act.While this is just a sampling of bills being considered by the students, it is providing them the opportunity to discuss and debate some of the same issues our current legislators are debating.One student remarked, “This is hard work getting everyone to agree and there needs to be compromise to get anything done.” Now let’s see if our state legislators will have the same attitude for compromise.STUDENT COUNCIL REPORTOn Thursday, boys and girls varsity basketball continues regional playoff games. This year, regionals will be held at Carson High. The game schedule will be posted on nnd1.org. Do you want unique memories of high school? Get together with your friends, pick all those special photos and words and submit them for a Buddy Ad that will be part of the 2013 Carneta yearbook. And remember, tell your parents about this special way of remembering your high school achievements.Pick up forms in the front office or Room 136. We can even email them to you. It is a great way to remember you or your child’s high school career!CHS TALENT SHOWThe annual CHS Talent Show is 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Community Center. We have 20 performances that will make other talent shows seems talentless. We have sincerely amazing talent here at Carson High School!There will be five cash prizes awarded to the winners. Get your tickets early. They’re $3 with a student body card, $4 without. You may purchase tickets from performers in advance or at the door. The team had excellent success. Bailee Barber placed fifth in novice expository for her presentation on fear and how to overcome it while Archie Redmond took fourth for his presentation on how to play the guitar and create a band.Callen Aten took fifth place in novice dramatic interpretation with her piece from Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” highlighting the hardship George had to face when dealing with his friend Lennie. Luke Szatmary and Walker Barnett placed second in novice duo interpretation for their rendition of the classic skit “Who’s on First” portraying an absent-minded Abbott and an increasingly frustrated Costello. Both have now advanced to senior division for speech events.In debate events Jacob Bertocchi and Walker Barnet placed seventh and second in speaking points in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, while Luke Szatmary placed seventh in senior division speaking point.Walker and Luke took third and novice and senior respectively on the topic, “Resolved: Rehabilitation ought to be valued over retribution in the United States criminal justice system.”Finally, Andrew Updegrove placed third in novice congressional debate, scoring a perfect six out of six in all of his speeches except one scored at five.Luke Szatmary, Jake Blake and Cristina Rodriquez also competed in the Lions Club Speaking Contest. Luke placed first and has advanced to the next round of competition. The team is now preparing for upcoming tournaments in Elko and Vegas.CARSON HIGH SENATORETTE CHEER CAMPCHS cheerleaders will be holding a cheer camp for students kindergarten through eighth-grade students 9 a.m.-noon Feb. 23 at Eagle Valley Middle School.Cost for the camp is $25 at the door. Take a step back in time with members of the Chamber and Concert choirs, with lovely music, a delightfully hilarious show and a Renaissance Feast prepared by the Culinary Arts Department of CHS.It all makes for a perfect royal night out with your Valentine, friends or family. Show tickets will be available for purchase on Monday from any CHS cheerleader, Mr. Carson contestants, the finance office and Sierra Adrenaline Cheer and Tumbling.They will be competing for the crown 6:30 p.m. March 1 at the Carson City Community Center.Raffle tickets are also being sold by the cheerleaders and contestants for $2 each.SENIOR SPOTLIGHTCarson High School is proud to spotlight senior Avery Hudak. She has a weighted grade-point average of 4.52. Avery’s class load includes many advanced-placement courses.At Carson High School, Avery is a member of the National Honor Society and has participated in a variety of sports. Along with mastering the piano for the last 11 years, Avery is also involved with the High Sierra Riders 4-H Club, where she is the outgoing president and senior advisor.Recently, she has qualified for the National Horse Judging Competition. After school, she volunteers at Eagle Valley Middle School in the eighth-grade Spanish class. Avery has been accepted to the University of Nevada Reno where she will major in education.She has been offered the Nevada Scholar Scholarship. Her ultimate goal is to become an English-as-a-Second-Language teacher.
