Coincidental timing has occurred with the start of the 77th Nevada Legislature and the actions of my own classroom. My government students have recently started Mock Congress in which the students created bills, conducted committee hearings and are now debating bills in the committee of the whole. How a bill becomes a law is coming to life not only in the Nevada Legislature, but also in my classroom. Bills being considered by these future leaders include increase in minimum wage, tax benefits for businesses that produce stateside as opposed to overseas, school security systems, immigration reform, federal student aid fund, gun regulations, and a penny elimination act. While this is just a sampling of bills being considered by the students, it is providing them the opportunity to discuss and debate some of the same issues our current legislators are debating. One student remarked, “This is hard work getting everyone to agree and there needs to be compromise to get anything done.” Now let’s see if our state legislators will have the same attitude for compromise.STUDENT COUNCIL REPORTOn Thursday, boys and girls varsity basketball continues regional playoff games.
